Day lamp is really hot! Plz help!

What's the wattage on your new lamp? For a 10 gallon enclosure I would go with a very low wattage...also a dimmer is a very good idea. My white's don't like hot and bright lamps at all; I had one and I knew after one day they were not happy, as all they did was hide in a corner.
And I wouldn't sit the dome directly on the screen top of a 10 gallon (don't know if you are, but thought I'd mention it), this could possibly burn your frog; there are stands you can buy to elevate the lamp above the tank or a clamp would work too.
However, 80 degrees isn't too hot for a day time temp. I would observe his behaviour and you'll be able to tell pretty quickly if he's unhappy.

As Lindsey has said you need a lamp with a dimmer switch so you can accurately control the amount of heat and light produced from the bulb. Also as a precaution when using heat lamps purchase a bulb that's wattage is no lower than 25 watts and no higher than 50 watts especially for a 10 gallon tank. Fallow these instructions and you shouldn't have to worry. Also 80 isn't a bad day time temp as was also stated above.

It is ok to set the lamp on the top of the screen lid if the bulbs wattage isn't too high. Most heat bulbs are only effective up to 12 inches. This will also depend on if its a 10 gallon long or 10 gallon tall though. Wattage is the main cause of issues with heat bulbs day and night types.

Some are stronger and have more distance like the bulbs with a concentrated beam. These bulbs are more effective at heating the ambient air within your tank and when combined with a dimmer switch their effectiveness is able to be controled so you get the temps you need without actually harming your frog. As with any heat bulb though I always reccomend some plant cover since they like to hide away from lit areas. I talking about incandescents ofcourse. You can't use fluorescents with a lamp that has a dimmer switch. They aren't made for them.
