Hey everyone! A couple of days ago I got Kirby, my whites tree frog, a light lamp so I could see him better, take better pics, and help him get a brighter shade of green.
It's really bright, and really hot! Hotter than his heat lamp. Should I take the fixture back and get one that has a dimmer? It's usually around and honest 70 F in his 10 gallon, now it's 80. It's also hard to keep up humidity...
For now I have the light on at day which gives him light and heat. The heat lamp is on at night. It gives a little less heat and nice glow like a night viewing lamp.
It's nice because he has high light/heat at day and a little light/heat at night. I'm just afraid it's too hat during the day.
Thanks for any advice!![]()
What's the wattage on your new lamp? For a 10 gallon enclosure I would go with a very low wattage...also a dimmer is a very good idea. My white's don't like hot and bright lamps at all; I had one and I knew after one day they were not happy, as all they did was hide in a corner.
And I wouldn't sit the dome directly on the screen top of a 10 gallon (don't know if you are, but thought I'd mention it), this could possibly burn your frog; there are stands you can buy to elevate the lamp above the tank or a clamp would work too.
However, 80 degrees isn't too hot for a day time temp. I would observe his behaviour and you'll be able to tell pretty quickly if he's unhappy.
As Lindsey has said you need a lamp with a dimmer switch so you can accurately control the amount of heat and light produced from the bulb. Also as a precaution when using heat lamps purchase a bulb that's wattage is no lower than 25 watts and no higher than 50 watts especially for a 10 gallon tank. Fallow these instructions and you shouldn't have to worry. Also 80 isn't a bad day time temp as was also stated above.
It is ok to set the lamp on the top of the screen lid if the bulbs wattage isn't too high. Most heat bulbs are only effective up to 12 inches. This will also depend on if its a 10 gallon long or 10 gallon tall though. Wattage is the main cause of issues with heat bulbs day and night types.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
The lamps have clamps (that rhymes!) but there's nothing to set them on. And it is a ten gallon long. The wattage is pretty low (idk what it is) but it just looks hot in there.... It's not blazing hot but it looks I would be sweating in there idk. So I think I'm just going to take the fixture back and get one with a dimmer.
Or I could give it to my little brothers mountain horned dragon? Idk haha
Some are stronger and have more distance like the bulbs with a concentrated beam. These bulbs are more effective at heating the ambient air within your tank and when combined with a dimmer switch their effectiveness is able to be controled so you get the temps you need without actually harming your frog. As with any heat bulb though I always reccomend some plant cover since they like to hide away from lit areas. I talking about incandescents ofcourse. You can't use fluorescents with a lamp that has a dimmer switch. They aren't made for them.
Yes it is incandescent! Thanks for da info
