Planted moss should be better, that's what I've been told. Or you could leave the moss and tweezer feed or feed in a glass bowl like Strider18 suggested. That way they aren't likely to get a mouthful of moss with their meal.
Leaf litter sounds like it would be really good looking. And I do have tweezers that I could always tweezer feed.
