Default Glad to find a Frog Forum!

    Just thought I'd introduce myself.

I don't own any frogs, instead, I my love of frogs led me to add a small garden pond last year to attract forgs and toads and it worked out well. I've been interested in frogs since I was a kid, but never had interest in keeping them indoors. My pond was the perfect solution. It provides a great natural habitat and benefits all sorts of animals. I also keep Shubunkin and Comet Goldfish in the pond and its great to see them interact with each other. My pond project is ever-changing and its a project I always look forward to.

I've also raised many American Toad tadpoles. I enjoy nature and spend as much time outdoors as I can, as long as its warm out.

Since my pond is the "setup" for the frogs, I'd like to share a few photos of it.

    Very cool!

I intend to build a pond in garden too in the future and hopefully some local frogs will enjoy it.

I am so jealous, I had a pond years ago but there are two larger ponds near by and the wild ducks
would use my pond as a rest stop and destroy it.
And the brats that live near me punctured the liner and I had to fill it in.
I couldn't afford to keep replacing the pumps when they would get cloggled with duck feathers
and the liner was the last straw.

    But yours looks great!

thanks! I wanted one for years and last year I decided to do it. Even on a budget it turned out to be a great addition.

I'm a little worried about that this Spring. We have a pair of ducks that always hangs out around our yard for about three weeks in Spring before they move on to somewhere else. Last year they left right after we put the pond in, so who knows what kind of chaos will occur this year.

    and thanks!

Hello JB, and welcome to the forum .

Very nice pond and great pictures! I love to hear about nature projects that boost the local species populations .

Do you know your local frog species?

Your first is a cute Northern green frog, also called Rana clamitans or the older name Lithobates clamitans. You can tell them apart from American bullfrogs by their dorsal lateral line that extends from the back of their eyes down their sides. They are also smaller than bullfrogs. They enjoys the same types of habitats, as you can see .

The American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana or Lithobates catesbeiana), as in your second photo lack the lateral ridge line.

Both of these particular frogs are females. In these semi-aquatic species the males ears (tympanic membranes) will be larger than their eyes. Female tympanums will be the same size as their eyes or smaller . Males also call or croak. Females do not. In these two species males are larger than females in full grown adults.

    Pretty neat!

Have you ever thought about joining Frog Watch USA? It's a program to help track local frog and toad species. You choose a location for monitoring and recording and then send it into the organization for local fauna data collection to assist in monitoring for decline and proliferation of species. You have the perfect monitoring place .

Thanks for sharing your great photos and story .

That is such a beautiful pond, and I hope you know how lucky you are to see those kinds of frogs often. I am new here as well, and the people here have been extremely friendly and helpful. Welcome!

Thank you. Even nicer, is that I live near a wooded park with a small pond, so I get to see Green Frogs, Bull Frogs, Leopard Frogs, Western Chorus Frogs, and American Toads quite a bit. Its something I will never take for granted!

The only toads I ever see out here are those big ones... ya know... the ones people lick to get high on :P forgot the name but They get HUGE! I've caught a couple myself. I do appreciate seeing scorpions too, just not when they sting me in the middle of the night!

We've got loads of American Toads in this area. I actually got to witness a bunch of them breeding a couple Springs back. It was pretty cool. I grew up being used to how common they are around here & I took it for granted. Now I see how cool it is to have such a stable population even in my own yard.
