Pet shops don't sell them because they have specialized husbandry requirements and even if they did manage to keep them alive they would be purchased by someone who would kill them because they have no idea how to care for them. If you are set on getting darts then do a lot of research and learn how to keep them before you buy one. Other than that, look around the forum and see if you spot a species that you like and ask some questions.

I don't think there is a good reason not to start with darts if that is what you want and you take the time to research their care properly. Most aren't that delicate if you can keep a steady food supply and the humidity up. My first frogs were a half dozen wc blue jeans pumilio back when they were a under $20 frog and they did just fine for me for a number of years.

I guess the reason why darts aren't recommended to beginners is because they are a totally different ball game than the average frog that is available to your average person is. Proper nutrition is more critical in darts than in most other frogs and a beginner may not fully understand this. I know I have lost a lot of darts in the past from improper husbandry, but once I figured out what I was doing wrong, darts became very easy to keep.
Also, with darts you do have to raise your own food and that may be to much for a beginner to deal with. I still have not perfected at it. I either have surplus or famine, hardly ever a decent middle ground. Another point, your average person does not have access to the resources needed to keep darts. The Petco and Petsmarts of the world are of no real help and neither are most ma & pop shops.

Perhaps I was wrong but I got the impression from your initial post that you were discouraging the OP from getting poison frogs and implying that as a whole poison frogs were difficult and not suitable for beginners. As far as the portion you quote from your initial post that would apply to any species from FBT's and up. I don't really see why my response was considered worthy of a roll eyes smiley but what ever floats your boat.
