I've read a lot of conflicting information so I'm looking for some personal experience. I picked up a White's tree frog and I have it housed in a Zoo Med Naturalistic Terrarium (12x12x18). The pet store said he does not need a heat source since my room temperature is typically 73-80 depending on the season, is this correct? What about the humidity level, I have read 50%, then in other places it states 75%. He was a nice blue / green color until we put him in the terrarium, now he's a dark brown. I'm assuming this is stressed induced from the move, or would it be due to his surroundings? I would think the small container would have been more stressful but he didn't turn brown until he was in the terrarium for a few hours. The pet store fed him every day, I've read to only feed every other day. Which should I follow?
The information given to you by store is not correct; these frogs require daytime temps of 85F and can drop to around 75F at night. Here is a well written Care Article with lot's of good information: Frog Forum - White's Tree Frog Care - Litoria caerulea. Humidity is not as important as ventilation with these guys and 50-60% is OK and would avoid anything above 75%. There are different set-ups you can build for a White and depending which way you go might need to spray enclosure maybe once a day. Can spray enclosure with distilled water to avoid water marks but frogs water dish should be dechlorinated tap or bottled spring.
A 12X12X18 in. would do for a baby; but adults are large frogs and require something like a 18X18X24 in. Recommend you cover 3 sides of enclosure to reduce frog's stress.
A baby should be fed daily with gut loaded (veggies & Repashy's Bug Burger) insects that are sized same as distance between frog's eyes. Once grown or when it starts losing interest on daily feedings you can go every other day, etc. Also, dust food with calcium/D3 2X and vitamins 1X weekly on different days with skip day in between. I use Repashy's products but RepCal is also good. Placing food in small glass bowl keeps crickets from wandering and allows to confirm frog is feeding.
Lots of incomplete or erroneous care sheets and videos on net. I trust the one on this site, good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
We actually bought the terrarium before deciding which species to keep. We will eventually upgrade it to something bigger. It's not a baby but it's not an adult either. It was in between the smallest and largest that they had. For a light, she said I can run a UVB 2.0 bulb, would this be the correct bulb to run? I have a small heat pad that I purchased with the terrarium. It is designed to use inside the tank though. With coconut fiber as my substrate what is the best way to use it? The tank that they pulled him from did not have a heater and they looked good, just an observation though.
Know of no heat pads that go inside the tank. Usually frog owners locate the pad on one side (outside enclosure). White's are nocturnal, so a light could be used, not particularly for frog; but for heat (infrared bulbs), plants (plant bulbs), observation, etc. Do remember to dust it's food and watch it does not get fat.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
