Use a daylight bulb for day and a infrared for night. You'll want to hover around 78° at night.

ok, i've got it up to 82, but now he's burrowed all the way under. Before he had his eyes sticking out. Does that mean he's too hot?

He may be if its night time, but not at 82°. His humidity is probably low or he may feel a little stressed due to the change.

Humidity is 80. I think he was stressed. I turned his light out for night, and now he's out exploring.

That's what it was. They don't like change very much and usually become stressed with it, but they do adapt.
