kimmy,
There is really no rush to change the substrate. The paper towel is serving its purpose. Just keep it clean.
Change it when he is sleeping so he is not disturbed.
For now your able to monitor feeding and pooping more closely.
Continue to include a shallow water dish-change water daily, as heather and I post earlier. ( bottled spring water- just rinse, dry w/ paper towel , no soap)
Remember , put new crickets in each night before he wakes up. And remove uneaten food in the morning after he goes back to sleep.
The uneaten crickets can just go back into the cricket keeper.
cricket size: the cricket should fit between his eyes- smaller in better than larger if you are not sure.-----

I'm afraid the belly photos are difficult to make out.
However the other - top view- he looks good!
One of my red eyes have a bit of darker coloration around the belly.
If he happens to be on the glass - I'll get a pic and post it.
We can compare.
Maybe you could get another pic of the belly some point, with out waking him.
I use a flashlight at night for pics.
How long is he? snout to bum
Is he pooping ?

kimmy,
Let's compare!
I just took these 2 pics -2 different red eyed tree frogs that are sleeping on the glass today.
Notice the color around the legs. Is this similar to what you are seeing?
They push themselves against the glass. The glass smushes ( is that a word?) their skin .
I think you can enlarge these pics -below
Let me know
Hopes this helps.

I've bought some good kitchen towels and have changed out the tank this morning while he was asleep .. I put down 4 layers of paper and soaked it really well .. I washed down the tank with some bottled water as well 'cause it had gotten quite dirty ..
When I woke up this morning I noticed a really big poo on the side of his water dish which is a really good sign so now I know there's nothing wrong there ...
The crickets I've been feeding him are quite small, I've been putting about 10 into the tank and he's been eating about 7/8 so that's good too ..
I took some more pictures this morning after I put the light into his tank which I'll upload now
He was very small when I got him but now I've noticed he got a little bigger .. I'd say he's about an inch in length![]()
The first and last pictures are the clearest I could get of his underside .. Do you notice how dark the colouration is or is that just me being over-worried about him ?
The second picture is from this morning when I woke up I noticed that there was this giant poop on the side of his water dish .. Which is a good thing because now I know he's going
The third picture is a back view of him which I took this morning because I cleaned him out and put in a new light
The fourth picture is of his entire tank, I cleaned him out , fresh water (bottled), fresh paper towels (soaked), cleaned off the glass with bottled water and a new day time light ... I'm still waiting on my timer , hygrometer and thermometer![]()
kimmy,
Let's see what others say as well.
My first thought is -I think it's just the frog's normal coloring.
Hang in there, your doing a great job !!!! Your frog is eating , pooping, and sleeping during the day !!!
ALL GOOD SIGNS!
I do not ever remember one of my red eyed tree frogs ever being up during the day. They sleep 'like-a-rocK'.
If it pooped on the side of the water dish - it means it was sitting there and likely to have soaked !
You might want to use distilled water for cleaning and misting as the other can stain your nice new viv. glass.
Keep the paper really wet to help keep the humidity up until you decide what you will do with the bottom. Your could even put in another dish of water.
When you are able, try to get more plants in there for hiding places.
Plan ahead. When I purchase a plant , I rinse the roots off, rinse the plant well and then it gets re-potted in tropical soil ( coco fiber) and left out of the enclosure for at least 2 weeks. Red eyes love pothos. The leaves are sturdy and wide.
Enjoy your frog !
Oh, and by the way, Happy Birthday !

Hi , Thanks for the reply ...
I was really worried about his colour but I've never kept these frogs before , I'm like an over cautious mother ...
I haven't seen him awake during the day either .. He likes to sleep on the glass now too, it's his new favourite spot .. He wakes up when it gets dark , waits at the door for me to feed him, chomps down on a few crickets and then climbs back up on to the glass and when I wake up in the morning he's fast asleep
I have been looking at some more plants for the tank and when I find the right ones I'll get them .. I think I'll get some more of the plastic plants for now though .. I bought some Bromiliad yesterday which I'll put in when I change to a different substrate , which should be in a few weeks .. I have some cocoa fiber and some sphagnum moss at home too![]()
I also think he's gotten a little bigger since I got him, he's about an inch in length when he's all curled up
Aww thank you very much for the birthday wishes![]()
Yeah he needs more plants to make him feel comfortable and safe.
I see u said u bought some plants, those are perfect.. But instead of changing to substrate right away, you could always rinse the plant really well and leave it in the pot and just sit the pot in your tank on the paper towel. Then once u feel he's in the clear you can change to the substrate and plant it in the ground.
Also, I have store bought plants and vines, but I have also went outside and found sticks to put in my viv. All you have to do is rinse them real well, then put them in the oven for 30 minutes on 350 degrees. Obviously u would let them cool after, but my red eyes love them, I have one that goes almost all the way across and then I have a fake vine intertwined around it to utilize more climbing space.
Sounds like your doing an awesome job so far though![]()
Hi,
I bought a large silk ficus and now I have that one in the tank .. He seems to be a little more comfortable now, he's moving around a lot at night time and he sits and waits at the door for me to come and feed him ..
I'm changing the substrate in the next week, I'm buying a new tank for him, the same size, and getting it prepared this week before I put him into it, I have several bromiliads there but I'm unsure as to whether they're big enough for him to hide in, my boyfriend has 2 dart frogs and he recently put bromiliads into his tank and his frogs absolutely love them and stay inside the leaves for the best part of the day ...
I think if I change the substrate and make his tank more like his natural environment he'll be a lot happier because right now I just have 2 plants and some paper towels in his tank ...
The sticks from outside seem like a good idea, what kind of wood/tree would I be looking for, I live sort of in the countryside so finding sticks wont be a problem ...
Thanks for your reply and I'll keep you updated ...
More pics on the way in the next few weeks of his new set-up ...
Oh and by the way , I've named him Yoshi!!![]()
That sounds like a good plan you have.
And yes, I agree, I like them having the most natural looking home too
I never usually use sticks from a certain type of tree. I have only used sticks that are already dead on the ground and for the most part already dry. I don't use anything that comes from any kind of pine tree or trees that produce that sticky sap either.
I find that when I'm near a river, is when I can find the best ones. These ones have the bark stripped from them, most likely from a beaver... So they are more smooth. But I have found smaller smooth dead ones in my own yard as well.
Haha Yoshi, that's a cool name! :-D
That sounds great , I'll see what branches and twigs I can find for him cause there's plenty around here
I like the idea of having the twigs intertwined as the one in my tank isn't used very much, he might just need some more climbing space
Thank You and I'll keep you posted![]()
