Today I visited petco to see if they had any pacmans in stalk, after readying about them I've developed a love for them and wanted to get one for myself. I looked in the cage and they have a baby! (: he was really cute but I decided to buy everything I need and get some other things out of the way before I get one; I also love tree frogs so naturally I had to walk over and glance at the cage that had them in it. Low and behold one frog was laying belly up dead; the water was far too full for the babies aswell. That made me pretty depressed I saw at my walmart they have a 10 gal for 10 bucks so my question is: how many gals for a pacman and also I've heard they don't do well with other frogs so no pacmans housed together? Thanks!
Pacman frogs are solitary creatures up until breeding season. Do not house them with other species of frogs or other Pacs. Pet stores don't give a damn about the frogs as I've learned. They are just a product to be sold. I recently saved a baby Green Cranwelli from what would have been certain death for the little guy/girl. 10 gallons is fine. They can spend their whole life in a tank of that size. Be sure to buy a multivitamin dust and calcium dust to dust his/her food with.
Have crick food that says it gives calcium anything else I should know ie do pacs like anything such as specific decorations like my whites love a certain rock I have are pacs like this?
Any species recommendations
Here's a care sheet on this forum for you to help you choose your first frog. Frog Forum - Choosing a Frog. Pacmans are easy on captivity level excluding C. Cornuta or C. Aurita (Not sure about the Aurita, but those are pricey), those can be intermediate. It's all based on husbandry, personal choice, budget. Since I'm into larger more voracious eaters I naturally would recommend you to get a pacman or pixie frog.
I've found that the less decoration in a pacman's tank the better. I know some people recommend hides, but mine is perfectly content to just burrow in dirt. I used to have a hide in his tank, but he just ignored it for three weeks, and it was taking up a lot of space, so it's not there anymore. He does have a fake aquarium plant in there, but that's more because I wanted some greenery than because he really seems to like it. Mainly, as long as they have a water bowl and dirt, they'll be happy.
Just a heads up for when you're deciding on species: Petco and Petsmart have a tendency to sell Cranwellis as Ornatas while they're still babies. I personally don't mind that I have a cranwelli, but if you really want the bright ornate colors be really careful picking out your frog![]()
Are cranwellis more expensive?
I got my pacman at Petsmart for $15.00. He/she was tiny, but is quicking getting big. I suppose it's better to buy from a breeder, but from what i've seen they are super expensive
They can be expensive like any other amphibian or reptile due to colors & patterns. Also take into account the size & age of the animal for sale. It isn't free to feed & keep them and for those of us that breed them, we are talking about animals in large numbers not just 2 or 3 animals.
The C. cranwelli we breed are in exceptional health and the colors our breeders produce are amazing. We also breed with NO hormone injections or chemicals of any kind. We guarantee that the health of our animals is our top priority.
Sometimes, you get what you pay for. $15.00 is a great deal......if the animal is healthy. Not so great a deal if you get it home & it starts having issues ie., flipping upside down, lethargic, not eating, MBD, has a massive Chytrid infection......
I wish you great luck with finding the right frog for yourself!
The Pacman frogs are not the type to enjoy handling much. I have found the Dumpy's are much more a hands on frog.
Yeah I totally agree with this, I would much rather pay for a frog $10-30 more than get a steal a large chain pet store. You bring the frog home, a month or two later the frog might have complications, etc. This is why you buy from renown reptile shops in your area or go to conventions with breeders that are reputable and house their herps with the utmost attention. Just a quick question, what other types of pacs do you guys breed? I found your youtube channel like a week ago and remembered your name from frogforum, I'll have to find it again and check out your videos.
I purchased both my C. Cranwellis from the same Petsmart. Grif got sick after I had him for 5 and a half months. It took me 2 months to nurse him back to health. Now he's back to eating normally and gaining weight well again. I don't know what made him sick but I'm. Going to try my best to make sure it doesn't happen again. So far the little baby Green C. Cranwelli is doing fine. Hasn't been acting strange or ill and has been eating and pooping regularly. I guess I've. Had a good eye so far. I have heard a lot of horror stories about people purchasing from chain stores and them being diseased or dying not long after purchase. I hope this never happens to me.
I bought my guy from petco on the 16th and hasen't ate so far...but it is really chubby which I think is a good sign..at the moment its just chiling in its water dish
Seems that you are doing a great job keeping your pacs, your one of the exceptions out of a lot of people that buy from chain stores and know how to properly care for a frog if it is ill. Obviously some things are out of are hands to treat, but yours seem taken care of really good.
When Grif became ill I noticed right away. He was very good eater. He wouldn't wait for his crickets to come to him. He would get out of his burrow and chase them all over his enclosure. When he stopped eating all of a sudden I knew something was up. I quarentined him after about 8 days of no eating. I was going to treat him for chytrid but there were no signs of it. He was lathargic and started losing weight. After 10 days I took him to the vet and was given dewormer and antibiotics to be given once a week for 4 weeks. I was also given a whole food vitamine supplement and a can of soft food which was cat/dog food for malnourished animals. I force fed him for 2 months. After a month I tried to increase his weight I fed him 2 pinkies a week for 4 weeks while also force feeding him crickets/wax worms/night crawlers. Just before he started eating again I stopped giving the pinkys and force fed him a cricket and a Hornworm. The next night he started eating on his own. It was tough but I pulleds him through.
Yeah it was hard for me. I was really upset when he got sick. I always connect with animals and I don't just see them as a dog or just a frog. They are family. It was hard. I also gave him his normal vitamins and calcium dust with water in a farely large dose once a week and also Flukers Reptiaide. I guess I must have done something right. I wish I knew what made him sick though.
Could of been a number of things: temperatures too cold or too hot, kidney disease, constipation or colon impaction, chemical abnormalities, vitamin and mineral deficiencies (most commonly Calcium and Vit. D-deficiency causing Metabolic bone disease), too much dietary fat (feeding a mice only diet instead of insects) cancers, parasites, toxins and more.
It definitely wasN't metabolic bone disease. The vet was impressed with his jaw strength. I always dust his food with calcium dust that contains D3. His temps hadn't changed from how I always kept him. I never gave him mice until after he got sick. The only reason I gave them to him was to put weight back on him. All animals like people eventually get sick in some way. I just couldn't figure it out. the vet wasn't sure either. He didn't have worms. I guess I'll never know. He could have caught a bug or maybe he had some kind of deficiency. Before he got sick he wouldn't eat anything but crickets. I mean NOTHING. I tried mealies/night crawlers. He wouldn't touch them. Now he eats night crawlers/crickets/hornworms, he LOVES hornworms. He wouldn't take food from forceps either until after he recovered and I offered him a hornworm from them. Now he will. Now I'm prepared if I have to deal with one of them getting ill.
I went on a trip to petco today. I learned that it's ok to keep firebelllie toads with barking, green, and whites frogs. Thats what they had on display. The staff told me its ok to keep them together cause the water filter cleans the toxins from the FBT and all the frogs are safe. The frogs were all the same size. I'm going crazy with stupidity. How tru is that guys?
