Hello! As some of you may know I recently acquired 2 more White's Tree Frogs. They are too small for the main cage though and are currently occupying the 10gallon in the dining room. (I have no doubt that my adult could easily devour both these young ones and still have room for more.)
While I was in my living room with some friends we suddenly heard a loud chirp come from the dining room. My adult is in the kitchen (which is next to the dining room) so I figured it was him. However it happened again recently and when it did all the witnesses claim they are certain it came from the dining room and the cats stared/turned their ears toward the 10gallon in the dining room.
When I got my first White's a year ago they claimed it was only a few months old. (If White's mature in 2 years then he is probably still not sexually mature.) yet these much smaller ones are apparently chirping unprovoked. Can they chirp before they are old enough to mate? Or is it something else I haven't thought of?
ebony told me once that she had one of her whistlers whisle at 2 mouths old
It may be possible
Yes , That's right. Whistling tree frogs start chirping/croaking early but I wouldn't know if this is the case with Whites tree frogs. There are plenty of members that own them on this forum who would know though.![]()
When I got my first White's, it was only an inch long. Very small. It was only a few months later before I noticed the "chirping." At first, I thought it was the parakeet in the room practicing a new sound, but after a couple weeks I found out it was the frog. So...I can't give you a better answer timewise, cause this was about a year and a half ago, but it was onlly a few months after I bought the inch long frog.![]()
I actually witnessed it chirping today.Very strange though. Does their chirping mean they are able to mate?
I don't think so, if they're very young. The chirping I noticed with mine was very different from their nightly croaking now.
Hello Crystal!
I first got my little guys (who incidentally turned out to be a little guy and a little girl) last October. Kibbits was just a tiny guy at that point, no bigger than an inch probably. By late December, Kibbits (the male) started chirping. I didn't realize that was what he was doing until a few weeks later when he actually started croaking. In fact, when it first started, I assumed it was Igby, the older of the two frogs because he was still so small!!! But it turned out to be Kibbits; I think the little guy was testing out his voice, and it was funny to see it evolve that way! Started out as a squeaky chirp, then gradually turned into a squeaky croak, and eventually into his booming low croak at night. And boy was he proud of himself once he got to that low grumbling croak. : ) He had "croaking" contests with just about anything - the vacuum cleaner, thunder, the television, a truck outside ; ) Haha!

A few weeks after I got my second Whites, which was incredibly small and still had a bit of a tail, I noticed a chirp coming from his cage, but I didn't think anything of it. Now, he is still quite young, but a lot bigger, and he chirps all of the time now. ALL OF THE TIME. Usually, it's whenever he sees or hears crickets. My avatar is a picture of his nightly ritual when I get him out to feed him: see the cricket cage, chirp with joy, and try as hard as he can to push his way into the cage.
Great pic! You guys make me feel guilty for not posting some of my own : ) (In a good way!)
