Some seem to stay either bright green or brown no matter what conditions they have. I have noticed some are more susceptible to their surroundings. My tank is mostly water with islands and stays fairly dark. I have to pull them out and put in another container to eat crickets. That container is clear and the lighting is very bright. I place them back in their tank after eating, and a couple of them are noticeably brighter green. But some stay the same no matter what.
