Ok sooo heres a few questions.
1. if i feed my frog reptivite and calcium will he grow faster? i know he will be healthy.
2. how often do i have to change up his diet hes been on crickets with some worms here and there and dubia roaches. i have plans to feed him mice but once a month.
3.how old until i can tell if its male or female.
4. how in the holy grail do you keep their tank humid enough all day for them! i cant get mine but up to 70 some times 90 but thats right after i spray them with the water.
5. is there such a thing as over feeding them? they eat like monsters mine eats like 30 crickets in the morning and 30 at night?
6. do we need uvb or uva or is a basking light good because i got like a 75W basking light
1) yes, calcium and multivitamins are critical during their growth spurts. Calcium should be offered every other feeding at the most, and multivitamin once a week, but that also depends on the brand you're using. Repashy Calcium plus (only brand I know of) is a calcium and multivitamin all in one, and I believe is formulated for daily use, but I don't use it daily, every other day at the most.
2) you can change his diet as much as you want. Dubia roaches, nightcrawlers, crickets, honed worms, occasionally some wax worms and super worms consist of a good diet. Mice should only be used as a treat and when growing, I find the extra protein helps.
3) 4 inches is when you can definitely start to tell, or if your frog is calling. Post some pics!
4) as long as the substrate stays moist and they have a large soaking dish there isn't too much of a concern. If you want you can try a fogger. Zoo med's reptifogger is a good one.
5) when they're young and growing, feed them until they stop eating, as long as what you are feeding can easily be passed, ie nightcrawlers, crickets, or Dubia nymphs (adults have harder chitin). When they're adults, males will eat a ton! Be prepared for that!
6). UVB is not necessary and some studies have shown that prolonged exposure can damage their eyes. UVA is just visible light. I wouldnt use a basking bulb. Stick with a normal incandescent light bulb on a dimmer to controls the light output/temps, and a under tank heater placed ON THE SIDE of the enclosure. That should be enough heat!![]()
Thanks for the answers it means a lot. Ill post pics tonight from when I first git him to now hes grown a lot in the month and week Ive had him. He was the size of a nickle and now hes close to the size of a tennis ball the frog is a monster. I love it
I have my own little baby too as well as a 4 year old female. My little one grew a full inch in less than 2 weeks!
ya, had one grow in inch in a week. very very aggressive eater, who just made a croak noise from under the soil, was hoping for a female with this one, but o well
I'd like to add horn-worms to the list of good things for them to eat, just not wild caught. wild caught are poisonous, but you can get the eggs to grow them online![]()
this is a 20G tank i got the frog in
i didnt have any thing to compare to so i decided to put a quarter on the frog lol. no idea if its male or female yet but he/she is only a month and a week old
Still too young to tell for sure, seems like it may be leaning towards female due to the head width, but this little guys still has a lot of growing to do and could easily go either way!
Also, I could consider making the substrate a bit deeper. These frogs really like to burrow, sometimes completely covering themselves.
Nice looking froggie!
