Default What is the most exotic Dart frog species?!?!

Hi. I have many exotic species from Green Tree Pythons, rare leaf tail geckos to exotic praying mantids. I like the more exotic hard to care for and find species because I can geek out on them. I have always wanted a dart frog colony, but can't decide what species to focus on. I don't want the common everyone has one of these species. What is considered the most exotic sought after dart frogs species, but impossible to find? Yes I am a glutton for punishment. Price is not an issue. Thank you in advance for your feedback....Tom

    I'll give it a shot...

How about Ranitomeya amazonica "Arena Blanca". No orange, but bright red like you see in several of the images in a Google image search.

I do believe though that the frogs that meet your criteria are extremely small and also very drab compared to the more common frogs. I can't recall the genus or species of any of them off the top of my head but I'll try and find a page I came across last year that discussed hard to find PDF's.

Wow, good call. I could not find the Ranitomeya amazonica "Arena Blanca" but the genus Ranitomeya is amazing. Ranitomeya reticulata is very cool. I also found the Oophaga histrionica "histronica blue" while searching for it. Not sure how rare they are but I really like it. Thanks for thedirection.

    Hi tommyboy,
If you are seriously considering any Ranitomeya , have you considered getting in touch with ( FF founder) John Clare.

How about Oophaga pumilio Bastimentos, Oophaga pumilio "Isla Colon - Boca Del Drago", and one of my favorite, Oophaga pumilio "El Dorado".

All these frogs are difficult to keep and breed and also very expensive. I'm years away from attempting to raise these species but I'm just throwing out ideas for you.

I almost forgot - Ameerega bassleri 'Tarapoto'.

Yes I saw the Oophaga and I like those a lot. I also really like the Ranitomeya. Are these two species related? Are they both Thumbnail frogs? I like the fact that the Ranitomeya are all different morphs of the same species depending on locale...correct? Like the Green tree Pythons or the Panther Chameleons. The Oophapa are cool because they have very clean patterns with nice colors. Lynn, does John Clare have a website where he sells his frogs? Do you know where a good place to find quality animals?

Just keep in mind that dart frogs that are rare in captivity are that way possibly because of difficulty in maintaining proper conditions in captivity.
