John, I just wanted to say thank you for trying so hard to help me with Kibbits. It feels great to know there are a group of people out there who really care about frogs, especially when I've had such a hard time finding a community nearby. Thanks again!

Hey John. Yes, they are only as colorful (bright) at night and when I feed them. They also spend a lot of time on the ground (they always have) but I hear that this is an indication that they may be sick. I gave them 3 doses of Panacur when I first got them (3 months ago). Should I give them 3 more doses in case of parasites? Also- how often should I clean their water (in their bowl and the fountain).
    thanks so much! Kam

Hi John, my R.amazonica male is calling and spending a lot of time with one of the females....hoooooray!!!!
However, I have never bred these and it caught me by surprise. I put a petri dish under a log today but for this species do they want it tilted and half full so they can put the tadpoles next to the water? Or do they want it flat and full of water so the tads are free swimming?
    Thanks

A Bichir is a long and slender primitive looking fish. Their scales are hard and shiny and are different from other fish by their rhomboid shape. The Dorsal fin is really made up of a bunch of smaller fins, kind of looking like saw edged teeth. Unlike the more modern fish the Bichirs do not have a swim bladder but have developed an air breathing organ, which acts similar to a lung and allows them to gulp at the surface for air. This organ also allows them to live in very Oxygen poor water conditions. Another interesting feature of the fish is like Amphibians (Salamanders and Newts) The young must go through a larval stage in which they have external gills. These will be absorbed as the fish matures. My Bichir has a lot of personality for a fish...probably has more personality then my Whites Tree Frogs! Lol!
