Hi all. Is there an (un)official list of bugs and critters that are toxic to American toads? I live in the Northeastern United States so that is where I would be foraging for bugs for them (to supplement their usual cricket diet).
Bugs I wonder are toxic: stink bugs, japanese beetles, caterpillars, ear wigs, potato bugs, grubs
So you are going to try to and feed wild insects? If you collect from a forest away from people it's preferred.
Toxic:
Fireflies
Stinkbugs
Japanese Beetles (can kill your native animals)
Centipedes and spiders are unnecessary
Slugs are not always accepted
Leopard Slug (toxic)
Wild crickets (very aggressive and can harm your amphibians)
Katydid (powerful bite)
Fire ants (can hurt humans let lone toads)
Millipedes (toxic)
Wild roaches (can be aggressive and dirty)
Housefly (could have feces and diseases)
Mice (unnecessary and could kill toad)
Ladybug (toxic)
Good Feeders:
Earwigs could be a staple feeder
Isopods (potato bug) could be additional staple
Grasshopper could be staple
Praying Mantises (could be an occasional treat) must be small or will eat your animal
Dragon Fly (treat)
Damselflies (treat)
Risky Feeders:
June Beetles (potentially a treat)
Cave crickets (could be attempted risky)
Earthworms (can contain parasites)
Carpenter ant (could be attempted but risky)
Wasps (can be attempted but risky)
Moths (research which are toxic first)
Beetles of any kind can be risky
Parasitic wasps (treat)
Green Lacewing (potential feeder)
If you have any questions of other feeders message me. I'd be glad to help you.
