Going to home depot today to get soil for my frogs and cricket culturing. Can anyone tell me what type of soil I need that is safe to use?
I am no expert, but I believe an organic topsoil would be your best bet.
I would definitely go to a pet store to get soil for your frog; the kinds of soil they sell at home depot are probably not safe for your frog. What type of frog are you getting the soil for? The most common type of soil that is safe for most amphibians is coco fiber/husk soil, which can be found at a pet store.
Also for cricket breeding, the best kinds of substrate to use are peat, sand, and coco fiber soil. However, some people have had fine results using vermiculite.
So I can't buy a organic soil from home depot with no additives to it? Just plain out soil? And iv got vermin. May try that for my crickets when I get home. Also the soil is for two great planes toads and a pacman frog.
I have been advised not to use potting soils; but since the soil you described is organic and has no additives, then it probably would be safe to use for your pacman and toads.
organic soil could probably be used but ecoearth cocofiber or exoterra plantation soil are better choices
I have used organic soils from Home Depot for American toads before. There's a few things I didn't like, not sure if it was just the brand I got or not but they have pieces of woods mixed in them, tend to dry out faster, and water gets dirty easily. I know one of the member here uses organic soil mixed with coco fiber at 50/50.
Caudata Culture Articles - Vivarium SubstratesWhile written for caudata, the same rules apply for frogs and toads.
Watching FrogTV because it is better when someone else has to maintain the enclosure!
I use 60% coco fiber ,40% topsoil 100% organic from a garden center near me,I dont trust home depot, allthough i got some sphagnum, sheet moss from lowes. My pacman, pixies love it. For my timor monitor i use the same thing ,and cover it with magnolia lives, sphagnum moss and sheet moss. My wtf get the fir bark and that is good because the bark is to big to swallow.
