He opened then closed a few times so I'm gonna assume it was shedding? I didn't know they shed this early and why do they try to eat it

The eating is recycling nutrients in their skin and they shed at any and all ages as far as I know.
They may also bulge or bloat their body out in odd looking ways to stretch the skin to help it come off. Another sign of shedding is a really fresh and clean looking frog afterwards.
edit-If this happened immediately after swallowing a cricket and it only did it a few (like 4 or 5 times) it might still be swallowing.
You aren't the first one to be worried about shedding!!!
