Considering I had to take my snake to work today so that I could cart her over to my mother's for a visit--I would say the people in my immediate circle don't even think much about it. It did get a good chuckle the other day in a social setting when everyone else was discussing their dogs and I chimed in w/ the frog stories.

That is so the truth John. People do think I'm crazy, I get the "Oh such a sweet pretty girl...and she has a bunch of frogs!" all the time. Then they see my big vivarium, and they're like, wow, that looks great, now I want one!

I've had weirder pets. Toads are a step towards normalcy for me after rats, a snake and a crayfish. Most people react negatively toward rats when you tell them, no matter what. They are amazing pets though. The only thing that stopped me from getting more is the combination of two things: I get very attached to them and they have such short lifespans. I'm allergic to cats, and I'm not allowed to have a dog in this apartment, so I always have to go for something smaller. I always loved toads, so I'm happy to have them now.

I had crayfish when I was a kid Pete!! I used to catch them all the time in the river by our house. I ended up with 2 of them as pets because I felt bad for them because they lost their "pinchers" LOL

I have never had rats, but my best friend did. They were sweeties but they stunk!

One of the nice things about working in science is that everyone else around you has similarly "weird" passions, whether it be bat flight, deep-sea jellyfish, or salt marshes.

    Salt marshes are pretty awesome.

I used to love watching mine eat. So many little things going on on the underbelly.

Oh, I didn't find that to be the case at all. I guess it depends how you keep them...at the suggestion of some folks on a rat forum, I used a special kind of kitty litter as substrate that seemed to keep any bad smells from forming. You had to keep on top of the cage cleaning, wiping it down with a hot wet cloth often, but they were worth it. Sweet, snuggly little things. My favorite picture of em:

Who cares what other people think. They, the frogs, toads or what ever you have, make you happy and they are healthy and happy also, well that's all that matters. Right? I'm 51 years old and for the first time I have tree frogs & toads in habitats in my living room. I've loved the critters since I was 5. Yes, at work they look at me a little crazy when I show them pictures, but I don't care.
