Well, I have always had an interest in frogs... For as long as I can remember, actually. My mom never let me get one. Now since i'm older, I got myself a red eye tree frog. Now that I have one, all my friends think its weird and dumb that I own a frog as a pet. I obviously don't think so, and i'm not going to let them change my mind. I love frogs.
So, as the thread title says, is anyone else considered weird for having a frog as a pet?![]()
People will always think it's wierd when other people are not doing what's considered "normal", which in this case is keeping anything without fur as pets. Hopefully, this view of pets will change over time.
I wouldn't think about it too much. It's them, not you, that are missing out on some aspects of life![]()
To each critter his own. People like a variety of different things in life. Our pets included. Life would be boring if we all liked the same exact things.
I have always loved critters. Well, anything with four legs, fuzzy or not, lol. We always caught frogs and toads when we were kids. Salamanders too.
My first love is the critters of the sea, but they are much too big to house : ). It then started with fish, which then led to fancy designed tanks. A few years ago my ex found a red-spotted salamander on the golf course and brought it home fir my daughter. I decreased the water in my tank, added land and rocks. Then my husband found another on the rail tracks where he works. We added him to the tank. It was more interesting to look at with the variety and different personalities all in one little place. They passed after about four years and the tank seemed boring. I purchased red-belly toads and had them for years. They were energetic and fun to watch. The tank seemed alive again : ). And the fish coexisted well. I have always wanted a red-eyed tree frog. They are so darn cute. Silly cute. So, after years of having red-bellies I finally decided to get one. Hopefully to get her a friend soon also. And so now I have fish and my frog : ). Well, and cats too.
So, who cares what others think : ). It's these little things in life that make our days fun and enjoyable : ). Just as dogs do for others.

And besides, the different artistic designs in our tanks are so pretty and the sounds of the waterfalls are relaxing : ).

People think you're weird if you keep frogs, but then I show them my living room display terrarium and they change their minds. When you see a really good looking terrarium with all the tropical plants and beautiful frogs in it, it definitely catches the eye.

Considering I had to take my snake to work today so that I could cart her over to my mother's for a visit--I would say the people in my immediate circle don't even think much about it. It did get a good chuckle the other day in a social setting when everyone else was discussing their dogs and I chimed in w/ the frog stories.
That is so the truth John. People do think I'm crazy, I get the "Oh such a sweet pretty girl...and she has a bunch of frogs!" all the time. Then they see my big vivarium, and they're like, wow, that looks great, now I want one!

I've had weirder pets. Toads are a step towards normalcy for me after rats, a snake and a crayfish. Most people react negatively toward rats when you tell them, no matter what. They are amazing pets though. The only thing that stopped me from getting more is the combination of two things: I get very attached to them and they have such short lifespans. I'm allergic to cats, and I'm not allowed to have a dog in this apartment, so I always have to go for something smaller. I always loved toads, so I'm happy to have them now.
I had crayfish when I was a kid Pete!! I used to catch them all the time in the river by our house. I ended up with 2 of them as pets because I felt bad for them because they lost their "pinchers" LOL
I have never had rats, but my best friend did. They were sweeties but they stunk!

One of the nice things about working in science is that everyone else around you has similarly "weird" passions, whether it be bat flight, deep-sea jellyfish, or salt marshes.
What is a salt marsh?
My most favorite is a blacktip reef shark. The closest I can get is a Columbian Shark Catfish.
I agree on the beautiful tanks and features and plants within them. They are pretty enough even without our little pets within them. Then to add life to them. Then people seem to understand.

Yes, people think it's very weird when I tell them I have frogs for pets. I run a soup kitchen & one night after the meal I went out for pizza & a drink with a group of volunteers. I passed around my iphone with a large collection of stills & even some videos of my little guys. Most of them didn't get it & were surprised & didn't understand when I told them how attached I am to them.
I used to love watching mine eat. So many little things going on on the underbelly.
Oh, I didn't find that to be the case at all. I guess it depends how you keep them...at the suggestion of some folks on a rat forum, I used a special kind of kitty litter as substrate that seemed to keep any bad smells from forming. You had to keep on top of the cage cleaning, wiping it down with a hot wet cloth often, but they were worth it. Sweet, snuggly little things. My favorite picture of em:

Who cares what other people think. They, the frogs, toads or what ever you have, make you happy and they are healthy and happy also, well that's all that matters. Right? I'm 51 years old and for the first time I have tree frogs & toads in habitats in my living room. I've loved the critters since I was 5. Yes, at work they look at me a little crazy when I show them pictures, but I don't care.
I agree. Most everyone has some type of pet(s) they love. Some usual, some less common. My friends think my RETF is cute. Doesn't mean they want one though.

Yes of curse people think I'm crazy to have frogs and turtles and monitor lizards and geckos and fish and a parrot oh and most of all don't forget my froggies i went to petco just yesterday and i bumped in to a co worker buying cat food and she said what are you here for and i said reptovita for my pets and she said i don't want to know and she ran out like i was out of my mind and my brother says that people like us are not normal and what do we talk about all this happened in 24 hours so you know what guys and gals frankly my people i don't give a rats behind what evrybody thinks
when I was getting food for my frogs a girl asked me "is that yours?" and looked at the bugs. I said no, my frogs and fish eat them. She didn't say anything after that. Everyone in my family except one of my older cousins thinks I'm weird for owning frogs. I have a PCF and a Pacman. I have 2 dogs and a 10gal fish tank. I don't see anything weird, but hey to each their own. I could stand for hours looking at my frogs just sit there and stare at me. My pacman is a nut, but people don't seem to get it. I get weird looks when I talk about my dogs different personalities, but they almost run away when I do the same for my frogs. Wonder what people will say when I get a snake^^
one of my friends at work said that i need a new hobby but now he listens on what i do to the terrariums and frogs and now i think he respects it now.and having a red eye tree frog as a pet is not weird but beautiful
