I was just glancing over my profile and I noticed that I had received a number of likes, but had not given nearly as many likes out. I have been giving out reputation, and hadn't been paying attention to likes. Do people generally prefer one or the other? What's the basic difference?
I am no moderator nor admistrator. I'm not even an somewhat old member of the forum. However here is how I view it:
Likes: Simply put, if you like something. I can like a post where you simply show of a nice picture of your frog. Or perhaps a funny stories, or whatever. However, I personally would not consider this when I'm thinking about what reputation you have. Sure, I might have liked your picture, but that does not say that you have given valuabe advice, been helpfull etc.
(I just used us two as an example, just to be clear)
Martin is correct. I usually give reputation for helpful posts. I just "like" when I like something. Sometimes I do both for the same post.

I have to agree =).
When I like a post say someone posts pics or talks about getting new frogs or finding there escaped froggie =LIKE
If someone posts about something I learn something from or find helpful and well thought out = REPUTATION
And yes sometimes that post gets both XD
