Just took these pictures today. I recently moved him up to rat pinkies, which I feed him once every two days, and 3 crickets inbetween days just to keep the metabolism up.
I purchases this pyxie at NorthEast Super Expo, Reading PA on 6/25. The first pic is the day I got him- He was a froglet, couldnt have been more than 2 weeks old. Now, almost a month to the day later, he is 3 inches. Any guesses on his sex?
I would say male just cause of the growth rate. I brought one 3 months ago at harve de grace and its that size now. So just by that im going to say male.
I can't tell from the photos either way.

Its a male. I have two that i had as froglets and they are getting big ,Im power feeding them dubia and they love them but one is groing bigger then the other as you can see a pic on my album i just posted a pic of them right now.
I would say its a male. Your frog has all the markings of a Pyxicephalus edulis.

I am going to say male because I don't think females exist. I am 5 for 5 with males. Also, that isn't an edulis is it? It has the three stripes. And it looks like my big guys.
Hard to really tell for sure. But I'm leaning towards female. The head is looking small in that third picture.
Is the edulis the dwarf frog? I bought him at the show because they had a giant in a tank, with the sign "TRUE AFRICAN GIANTS-FROGLETS $30!!" the breeder said it only took him 11 months to reach that size, and bought a froglet for $30 thinking it was so awesome.
I love my pyxie 'aka CC' and will keep him regardless but I am going to be furious if it is a dwarf species.
Edulis is the dwarf. There has been quite a debate on this forum about the different species. The green stripe certainly marks a juvenile. Here are the distinctive characteristics of P. edulis, I'll let you decide:
1) upper jaw has irregular pale bars
2) pale interorbital bar
3) distance from eye to tympanum is about the same as the diameter of the eye
4) white elliptical or crescent-shaped spot on tympanum
There also is a problem with the common names. In Africa, P. adspersus is known as the Giant Bullfrog and P. edulis is known as the African Bullfrog. This could be a source of confusion.

I love pyxies too, no matter what the species. It looks like CC is going to be a nice looking frog

Its 100% P. adspersus. No dwarf.
cheers
Hi Daniel:
What were the distinguishing features that makes this P. adspersus? Not trying to argue, just want to figure out how to tell them apart.

Young adspersus have 3 green stripes, some of the edulis Most have one green stripe in the middel but turn verry fast into yellow/white) has as wel 3 green tripes. But the outside green stripe at the young edulis are not reacht the eyes. At the adspersus the green stripe reaches till the eyes.
Also the P.adspersus is the only pyxicephalus specie that has a bumby line ( a sort of eyebrows) at the top of their eyes.
cheers Daniel

It's a giant 10000% i spoke to a seller and she told me 2 years ago she received 30 tanzanian frogs as giants and she lost money on that deal so one frog is not a big deal.
Thanks, Daniel! Your post and pictures really helped me. Last year, a group of Frog Forum members and South African herpetologists have been working on an African bullfrog identification guide. Unfortunately, it's not finished yet, since I lost contact with the folks in South Africa.
@ Daniel, Thanks a mil man. I waxs going to sell him back to the breeder at the next show, would have looked pretty foolish.
nice fat little female
Thanks Tombot im taking him back to the seller at the show and have a talk on his labeling so just pixsie don't cut it on the containner
