Hi everyone, I'm trying to decide whether I should get a red eyed tree/leaf frog or a whites tree frog
The pros of getting the red eye is that they are colorful and bright
They also do not get to large
The cons are that they are slightly expensive and hard to find
And i have read that they are quite boring although i am not sure about this
The pros of getting the whites is that they are easy to find and not very expensive
They also seem to be relatively easier to care for
The cons are that they are slightly dull in color
And they do get to a large size
Please help me decide on which treefrog i should get
Im really partial to my Red Eyes. Get a small group of them and they're not boring at all. They also have albino ones so you can get a little color variety. They are easy to care for once you understand and meet their care requirements, but that's true with most frogs.
I toss in some notes here...
The Whites require somewhat more maintenance since their droppings are much larger and they trash the tank pretty routinely. But they are very active at night and many times in the day. They are much more vocal than my Red Eyes too.
The Red Eyes are pretty mellow, talk it up most nights, and since they don't have the weight and appetite of the Whites, the tank needs less spot cleaning or plant change out, They are more active when a pair or more are kept too.
The Red Eyes are more colorful, but Whites are what I'll call more animated, crashing off things and diving for a meal.
The Red Eyes are more precise in grabbing a cricket and I haven't had one break a plant in half as I have with the Whites due to the weight difference.
Its a tough choice. You should be happy either way.
I wouldn't part with my Whites or Red Eyes.

Thanks for the replies
I don't know if you live near one, but Animal Ark usually has Red eyed tree frogs. I don't think any PetSmart has them, unless they are just different here in Utah!
Hi Jon K
If you add your location to your profile someone might respond with somewhere nearbby to locate the frogs.

Josh frogs have them most of the time. Tony here on the forum seem to sell them quite frequently as well. They both have a great reputation and I'm sure you will not regret it. And if you're still unsure about ordering online, I think Josh frog have a "live on arravile" garantuee.
Sorry i didnt include my location i live in chicago, IL
Unfortunetly i dont have an animal ark near my location
The closet places to me are animal crackers, but i have never seen any red eyes there
Petsmart no red eyes
Petco no red eyes
And chicago reptile house i went here last week and they had red eyes listed for sale, but they were out. They told me to call the week after, so i called this week and they said they didnt have any. They told me to call back next week. So im not sure how reliable this place is
Southside chicago is more precise
I know the petsmart closest to me has Whites, but I'm not sure where you could find Red Eyes. Sorry, interesting topic though.
Ill take a look on josh's frogs
I have two red eyes, I got them from a reptile expo. 2 for $20! Mine are still young so they don't have much of a pattern yet, but i enjoy them alot. And the frog you decide to get probably depends on the size of the enclosure he/she will have. i have my two red eyes in a 29gal Poludarium.
I also want a Whites, but i don't really know much about them..
if you my plaudarium as in a lot of water, be very careful because RETFs are not very good swimmers and can drown
but man 2/$20 that is an amazing deal
i have whites and RETFs but I don't think that I could choose between them
but deff. check with Tony because he does usually have some available

Anyway it is a custom built tank that is 30x12x20 (lxwxh)
It has exo terra style doors and cost about $50 to make
It has a custom clay background with branches sticking out
The live plants include
- button fern
- korean rock fern
- ficus pumila
- black mystic earth star
- and a plant with large leaves labeled as eucharis species
and it has a waterfall but im currently trying to get that to work because the water is not staying were it is supposed to
And the petsmart closet to me does have whites but ive never seen red eyes there
Go to a reptile expo near your house .go to reptile channel and click on events and expos ,they have the dates on there so maybe theres one by you good luck i have wtf now i like to get some retf
Well i checked the reptile channel and the closet to my location is about an hour drive so im not so sure about that
I know that i might sound like a noob but i have never been to a reptile expo and was wondering if you had to pay to get in
8 to 10 bucks to get in and an hour away is not bad i wish the shows near where i live are that close your'e a home run.go get them and enjoy them
Seems like you're pretty set on Red Eyes but I thought I'd put in my two cents.
I love my White's, they're great frogs, have wonderful personalities and their range of colors is amazing, though they are quite monochromatic unlike the Red Eyes. I also love the fact that you can handle White's for short periods of time without having to worry about injuring or scaring them, as long as they're used to human hands and have been well established in their tank, they don't have too much of a problem with handling. In fact, one of my White's, Bruce Wayne (he's blue), is more active when I handle him than he is when he's just sitting in his tank. He likes to climb all over my hands and arms and leap onto my shirt. Once I even walked around the house with him sitting on my shoulder (only for about five minutes, then I put him back) with no problems.
But whatever you choose, make sure it's your decision, though you'll probably be happy either way.
