When he make the popping sound, he doesn't puff up either (like they do when they feel threatened). When we talk to Grif he'll usually turn towards whoever is talking and make that popping noise. I think it really is just them saying hello!
Mine doesn't puff up when he makes noise either. He used to hiss quite a bit when I first got him but is now relatively calm in his surroundings.
