Well the racks I picked up were not what I was expecting. They say on the box "rated 1000lbs (pounds) per shelf" I built one 6ft tall and the other I did as a 8ftX3ft bench. The problem I've run into is that the shelves are made of particle board (3/4"). I was standing on one while I was building it and nearly put my foot through it. *sigh*
Any suggestions?
I will post pics after work tonight
Might be time to lay off all those cookies and ice cream.. Atkins has a pretty good plan. And if you're really having trouble keeping the pounds off the Lap Band is another alternative. Those would be my suggestions....but its nothing to be embarrassed about everybody's got their thing.

Geee thanks. -_-
I wonder if that happened because your weight was concentrated in one spot, but with the other things you are going to be putting on the shelves, the weight will be distributed more evenly. It would probably be fine, IMO.
yeah if you look at a lot of those racks you'll see that they say up to so much weight 'equally distributed"

Still though, it's not like he put 1000lbs in one spot, it should have been able to handle his weight. I'd be nervous, I know how heavy my frog tank is!

Yes I'm a bit nervous about it. my best idea was to double up the boards. Since I could only use do many of the shelves. Oh well, what can I do?
Assuming you did not have that pet elephant on your shoulders there is no way that a 3/4 inch thick board should of failed that way unless it was defective. What type of board was it. The smooth MDF type board or the fiber board made from wood chips?
On my rack I used much thinner boards for support. Tho mainly it was to allow the tanks to slide on a smooth surface rather then the wire shelves them self.
