The BC Reptile Club had its second reptile show/fundraiser this weekend. I had been searching for a male chameleon for several months and finally found a one month old Veiled Chameleon! I think its a boy, he appears to have tarsal spurs, although he is only 2 inches long including tail so its hard to be certain. Any ideas for a name? Or any Chameleon owners out there who can provide tips for care would be much appreciated... I have done my research, but its always nice to hear what other people know through personal experiences.
Cheers!

Adorable
Oh so cute. Hmmm, what about button cos he's as cute as a button. Oh!! actually scrap that..has the word butt in it..not so cool.I'll keep thinking
.
I don't have one, but I know my share of them. You need to feed them in a cup. Like you put the insects in a cup and put it infront of them and let them eat it from t here. They, and the set up needs to be misted daily. They need a flexarium. I would say the largest one is the best. They need a heavily planted terrarium, due to they like to chamoflauge. Its in their name. Hopefully you got it captive bred, because wild caught animals will probably not make it. Babies should be fed fruitflies, pinhead crickets, small insects in general. You need to dust the insects twice a week for babies, and once a week for adults. Basking lights should be provided, make s ure it has uvb, and uva. Def. do not put it in a tank of any kind. These are strictly look at pets. I would limit holding t hem to a bare minimum. There should be no drafts in the room as they are hypersensitive. You can put their cage near a window(partially) so they can get some natural light as well. But i still would use lamps. Place some lights on top, some on the middle part. Bottom part doesnt need anything. I would recommend putting tons of potted plants in. Like large potted plants. Put in some fake plants as well. Lots of branches. Etc. And itll be fine.
OH almost forgot. As for names I think if its a male call it "Leon". Its in their names and it also seems to suit them.
Congrats-a definite cutie.
Awesome!
That's one cool pet. I wish there was a reptile convention near me. I'd go in a heartbeat!![]()
Since they are native to Yemen, I would give it an Arabic name.
I love this about him...I wish all my other pets could eat from a cup...there would be a lot less escaped crickets running around the house. He is already eating, he ate within a few hours of being in his new home.
I have the largest flexarium ready and waiting, but he is only a couple inches long...so I am keeping him in a plastic tub with no lid until he grows a little. The breeder told me to do this, this is how he was raised from an egg...
Yes he is CB
Thanks for all of the info!![]()
Too cute!
Congrats!I love My Chams They are Fantastic creatures! Become a Member on www.chameleonforums.com Everyone there is very helpful, and they have awesome ideas and setups and everything. Its a great forum
Its good that you have the biggest flex. if yuou are keeping him in that container make sure to poke holes through sides, fronts, and back. You dont want himt o get stressed. I would keep handling to a minimum. As to it may stress them out. When handling, be gentle and slow. Like if you were a tree. Remember to take regular visits to the vet. These animals CANNOT skip a vet visit.
When he/she gets a little bigger and you put it in the flex. Make sure the flexarium is densely planted/decorated. Try looking up what are natural plants to their environment. Like what they would normally stay on. Again I cannot stress this enough, its in the name "CHAM" meaning chamoflauge. So like I said heavily plant it. and I do mean HEAVILY planted. Like every inch of flex should be used for it. I would buy a large tree(shrub) if I were you, and use that in the flex. Just so he can blend in with the tree. He most likely will blend in with the leaves. If the tree isnt heavily leafed. Then just buy fake ivy and strap it to the branches. I know it sounds stupid but it should work. I will keep saying this because it is th emost important:
1)Ventilation BUT NO DRAFTs(sudden change of temps could kill it)
2)Feed from a cup
3)Heavily mist the WHOLE set up TWICE a day(they dont drink from a dish) just treat it like an anole in this extent.
4)Provide tons of wood work, climbing places(vertical, horizontal, etc. Doesnt matter).
5)provide tons of coverage for hiding. They are not animals that would sit outside waiting for someone to attack it.
6)Provide 4-5different basking spots (they arent that bright so yeah.) Make sure the flex stays warm. Look up their temps. If you want a good bulb. Iam currently using an expensive bulb called "powersun" it provides HEAT and UVB+UVA! Which is what they need most. They also do need places to get out of the heat. So itslike a treefrog/anole kind of thing.
7)Let it climb on you, dont just pick it up(I cannot stress it enough), it is the worst thing someone can do.
8)Keep them solitary
9)Yearly vet visits
10) Make sure the room temp is atleast 75 at minimum (so when you take it out).
11)They are very sensitive
and thats pretty much it. :P Follow guidelines and you should be fine. Their like little kids(hard work). Or like a turtle, box turtles or tortoises actually. Because they require alot of work and devotion. And they give you hours of endless fun and pleasure! xD
What a cute little guy! I love his eyes. And it looks like he might be a little flirty.
Soooo sweet!
Have you decided on a name?
How about these for names: Akil (intelligent); Kadir (green) or Riyad (garden)? Can't wait to watch this little one grow!
Thank you everyone for their advice and suggestions. I have decided to name the little guy "Norman." After reading all the posts on this thread and reading everything I could find on the internet I decided to buy him a mini mesh cage. Keeping him in a tub made me nervous...and since I moved him he seems much more active. Here are a few pics I took when I was moving him from old cage to new.Enjoy!
This is the new cage.
This is how big he is! Bigger then he was a week ago, he had his first shed.

Good julia! You did great in buying a wired cage! These animals love ventilated areas. Ventilation doesnt mean draft, but I mean like "open". Anywho, thats a nice chamo nursery. My friend from puertorico had bought a pair of these years ago. Which was when I was 14 and he was Id say 13ish. They had lasted him a few months. Sad thing, he kept in a 55g thinking it was big. So did I, back then I didnt know much about reptiles. I branched off into turtles and toads. He into lizards and frogs. Currently lost contact with him, but last time I heard from him, he had a pair of males together and they fought. Sad part one died, fascinating part was how they display their emotions through colorations and fades. So if yours ever turns red, orange, gray, black it tends to mean that they are upset. So I figured, because he had told me thats what they were doing everytime the chams, saw each other. His was a jacksons chameleon, I forget what it was. I do remember it had stripes no matter what. He got em for 50-100 each. In puertorico, animals are cheaper for some odd reason.
Oh sorry for ranting off. I was reminiscing the past! But anywho just remember, after it grows to atleast 4inches it should be upgraded to a large flexarium. Adults should be in the largest flexarium you can find or make. The more room, the happier they are. But let me say this! that sure is one healthy little bugger! Ived seen these before, they dont look as healthy as yours do! You got yourself a keeper.
