    Default Something different

Here's something a little different I wanted to share with you all. We went for a herping expedition in the Magaliesburg area which lies in the North West of Gauteng in South Africa, a place called Mount Grace. They have quite a few puff adders (Bitis arientas) and we went through to give the guy who's the property/estate manager a crash course on what to do if he encounters a venomous snake.

After 4 hours on a cold windy morning we came accross this big beautiful female under a larger rock. There is no greater reward as I have been looking for puffies to photograph for quite some time now.

    Magnificent!

It has been a while since I have come across a venomous snake in the field, but I still get the rush thinking about it.

It has been 11 years since I have seen a puff adder in the wild and for over a year now I have made it my active goal to find one so you can imagine my excitement when we found it. And its always better to find a large specimen - she measured close to a meter.

On this trip we also found various scorpions, geckos, lizards and an amazing rana species which was unidentified - I was in no mood to play around in the water to catch it

Strangely enough no clawed frogs which I was expecting to find quite few, next time we go out there I'll try get more amphib photos for you all.

I do not think there is anything more satisfying than actually finding what you are looking for on a field trip.

When you're in (eastern) Massachusetts, you're just happy to find anything. LOL Cool find on the puff adder, its been a while since I have seen one.

Wow Darryn, that's some photo. Well done and well done for finding your target species.

Very few people here do it - I don't think we'd see many posts.

Hey, what you do in the privacy of your bedroom is your own business. I don't judge.
