    Question Frog help need now

hi guys this is my 1st post im at my dads today and when we were outside we found a little baby frog. hes only an inch big and he was on the street in a big parking lot so we picked him up and took him home. we got some rocks and a stick , cleaned them off and now hes in my old 1 gallon betta bowl until we go home tomorrow and put him into a terriarium. hes really only an inch big or smaller so would an 2.5 aquarium work? its completly empty and was thinking of keeping him in it until i coud get a bigger one. i have kept bullfrogs befor and have some experience with amphibian keeping. thanks

What kind of frog is it? I wouldn't recommend keeping any kind of frog in a 2.5 gallon tank.

The 2.5 is too small but please read the below thread for making an inexpensive, and easy home for your new frog.

Keep in mind that you need to ID him and read the applicable care sheet. He needs a proper home with the right temps and humidity, the correct substrate and the means to climb or dig or hide to reduce stress and thrive.

I'm pretty sure he's a American toad for sure. I can get pics on either tomorrow or the day after that.

so today i got either a 4 gallon or 5 gallon aquarium for him. i put some dry dirt some moist dirt , some tree bark and lots of grass for him to burrow in. hes been burrowing a lot and its so cute i went to petsmart to get his aquarium but they didn't have any insect except a little box with crickets in it. it said to punch out a little hole in the little door and place it in the vivaquarium ( sorry i dont know how to spell that so i refer to it as aquarium ). so i did and half of the crickets came out so i put the box into the old betta bowl he was in and now theres like 11 crickets in their. he ate 2 or 3.

Keep the crickets in a separate container than your toad so that they dont chew on your toad at all and only feed a couple a day, especially considering it's such a small tank as it is. 4 or 5 gallons is still very small. Also, make sure you gutload your crickets with nutritious foods and dust them with vitamins to keep your toad healthy. Do you have a place for your toad to soak?

so i have been watching him and he looks really happy i dont know if i should redo his home caus i feel like i did it wrong. does anyone know what a toad tank should look like? i keep on thinking im not doing it right but he seems happy jumping around into his little pool and burrowing. i put 3 inches of potting soil with some pieces of tree bark that doesnt have any pesticides or fertilizer in it for his substrate but i keep on reading coconut fiber is also a better choice to. i have some rocks that are bigger than him in their for him to hop on and a stick that i put for no reason . should i switch the potting soil with the tree bark for coconut fiber? and his pool is filled to the same height as his head but i put this rock that the top is tilted for him to get in and out and left a deep spot for him to get all of himself wet. ill post pics in another reply in a sec.

My one concern is the size of the tank going forward. I think in the near future you should either make a budget tank (as Don Lisk) suggested or invest in a 10 or more gallon tank. Heck, depending on where you live, I would be up for giving/mailing you an extra 10 gallon I have! Send me a private message, and I help get you that larger tank.

Be careful with the potting soil. A lot of potting soil has fertilizer added to it, or those little styrofoam balls that could cause an impaction. Eco-earth (coconut fiber) is safe, easy, and pretty cheap, so I would switch to that if I were you.

Also, I think toads might appreciate a coconut hut, or piece of cork bark, or something similar to hide under.

I would make it deeper too. That isnt much for a big fat toad to burrow in.
