Thanks for the reply, Amy. Yeah, I have plans to get him new substrate in the morning! I was thinking the coco fiber like you said or maybe some astro turf of some kind? I'm also going to get him more things to climb on. It's cute to watch him discover something new I put in his habitat. He hops all over it like a kid at Christmas.

It will definitely love more branches. Being a tree frog, think trees! I would go with the coco fiber, it is safe plus you can eventually put live plants in it My tree frogs hate the coco fiber, but I have it covered with live moss, large flat river rocks, and other types of plants. Plus I have a bunch of branches in there, so they almost never touch the ground, usually only to snag a cricket that didn't make its way up a branch.

Congrats on your new frog. A simple thing to do is put down leaf litter over the substrate which will keep him from getting covered in coco fiber and help you to keep your tank glass clean. Starting him with a cricket bowl will help to reduce crickets from wandering off and dying in the tank. You can get crickets at any of the big box petstores or a local reptile shop. That will be his main diet. You will also need to pick up some vitamin/calcium supplements to dust the crickets with. Also provide a shallow water bowl for him to soak in with tap water treated with a water conditioner that is used to remove chlorine ...just like they use for fish. LOTS of plants will help him to feel more comfortable. LOTS of broad sturdy leaves. Did I say LOTS. I can't emphasize that enough. He should be able to hide from you completely if he wants. The more opportunities he has to hide the LESS he will hide. He will move around more and be more active. When you first get them they will be all over the tank looking for an escape route and checking out their surroundings. As they get use to their new environment how you have it set up will determine how active the frog is going forward. Help him to feel as comfortable as possible and you will enjoy your new friend.

Thank you! It was a lot of work, but I have very happy tree frogs now. That was my first "build" Others on here have even more fantastic beautiful vivs than me. Good luck and have fun! You'll be amazed how much money you can spend on a tree frog LOL

Cheri, thanks for the info and tips. It didn't occur to me that the more hiding places he has, the less he'll hide but I guess it make sense since he'll have a lot more things to jump on and climb on.

Frogs are small so they are always afraid of being eaten by predators. If he is surrounded by plants and leaves he won't feel like he has far to jump if he wants to hide. If he feels exposed he will hunker down and stop moving.

    Scstewart20,

    Welcome to the Forum!
That's a great story, looks like he was meant to come home with you!

You must also be a Nascar Race fan! I'm gonna make a wild guess and say Tony Stewart #20?

Actually, that's just purely coincidental! I had no idea, I just used my first two initials,my last name, and the day i was born lol but that's neat its his number. Anyway, I was just making an update that I kept all your guys advice in mind when I went to the pet shop. Tyler has a whole new terrarium with coconut fiber substrate, two branches, river rocks, two live plants and several fake ones to provide more hiding spaces. Its not elaborate but he's happy with it for now and its still a work in progress. Pics are located in my new photo album!
