Default Weird, White, and Fuzzy in the Water Bowl!

Howdy Y'all (He says in southwestern Missouri style),

A friend of mine, 1beataway, has been finding white, fuzzy objects in her Gray Tree Frog's water bowl about the size of a mouse "fuzzy" (an immature mouse that has grown in a coat of hair, but is not yet exploring outside the nest). Here is what she told me:

"Today I refilled my Gray Tree frog's water dish. When I did, I noticed something in it and immediately thought it was like a dead frog in water (fuzzy), which is weird cause I knew the bowl was clear. Then i saw a second, so I got toilet paper and touched them and they deflated. So I got the dish to empty it out into the toilet
there was something in the dish. Kinda had a gauzy or moldy look. There was a big chunk outside the dish too, covered in dirt. Then I was afraid that was my
frog. And there was a super, super strong smell. I feel like I've smelled it before. It was almost like onions or chives."

Any clues as to what these mysterious objects are? She was able to find her Gray Tree Frog, he was happy and healthy, but she has no idea what the white, fuzzy things are.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

Sounds like mould growing on feces, since feces often gets into the water bowl.

When I had a little water bowl I noticed white fuzzy things but never as big as you've described and they were small patches on a submerged piece of wood. I'd hazard a guess at some kind of mould, the other material is probably organic matter that started decomposing in the water, once again this happened to me as some unlucky bugs that fell in the water didn't get out.

I'd give the water bowl a thorough cleaning with cleaning products and then wash it just in hot water and wipe it dry until 1beataway thinks it's clean. Maybe bake it in the oven if she feels that it's not clean enough.

Water bowls should be cleaned out daily. I make that part of my morning ritual.
    1. Feed darts fruit flies.
    2. Clean out tree frog water bowls.
Nine tanks takes ten minutes ...tops.
You don't want them soaking in their own poop the next night anyways.

If you do that every morning nothing could ever grow in it.

Water bowl should be cleaned every day. I wash the bowl in hot water and put it back in the tank and fill it with some fresh room temp water. That way no mold can grow on the poo, because that's what it sounds like!

Before I sound like a bad pet frog owner, I do clean out my bowls. The humidity here is so low and my gray treefrog has a small bowl (because he's small) so I am having to add water twice a day. Also, this frog is so active but he almost never dirties the water; he's my perfect little frog. Yesterday I did skip the cleaning. Today I was running late for work because of school stuff so I refilled, with the intention of cleaning it when I got home. But the night before last night I cleaned his bowl. How could it have grown so big so fast?

I have 5 White's messing up one bowl. If I was going to have mold, I would have expect it in that bowl. lol. I have been having so many problems since I moved. In the last 3 years, everything has gone really well.

    IBeatAway.
Check out this link and if that is the mold you have then it is possible it is coming in with the water. This mold can more a 1 inch per hour and will live off your viv and reproduce quickly.

You would need to find out if its coming in with the water or from a decaying plant under the substrate.

Heres the link and let me know.

I don't know. I looked up pics and some of them do kind of look like what I saw. The bigger chunk outside the bowl was mostly covered in dirt, but what I could see was white and actually almost like a spider's nest, I guess. But what was inside the bowl looked more like a thin layer. Do slime molds have a strong smell?

Not sure what it will smell like but mold smells bad. How long was your house not lived in before you moved in?

I would experiment with your water supply. Place a small glass of water outside the viv and see if it appears like it does in the viv's water dish.

I will try that. To me, when I turn my shower on, I think there's a strange smell. If it was slime mold, would it be something to worry about? I do have 3 other tanks though and nothing is growing in them. John thinks it could be feces growing mold, and says that it can happen in 24 hours, and I know that I cleaned that bowl yesterday and this morning there was more.

It definitely could be. My Red Eyes go in the water dish and it seems to expand like soaking a piece of rice.

The first thing I saw this morning when I looked into the tank was a very fuzzy piece of feces in a really obvious place (which means it wasn't there 24 hours ago or I would have seen it. So it looks like that might be the culprit. I don't know why there's suddenly that issue now, but at least I'm not crazy about mold growing in a day (and hopefully now people won't think I change their water only once a week I'm smarter than that). This frog likes to do all kinds of things that get my heart racing, so of course this frog would do something that makes me think 'Is that my frog dead?!'

I'm still going to do what you said Don. It's not well water but there's definitely a smell and I have no idea what the water here is like.

I wonder if you could have your water tested by someone to see what's up with it. We have well water here too and it had a stink to it, we had it tested and there was all kinds of things wrong with it. Now we have a 12 filter system and a softener. We only drink bottled water and my frogs (and cats) all get bottled water.

My WAG w/o pictures is one of the water molds (Oomycota) which are actually protists and neither fungus nor mold.

I would venture to say you have very hard water in VT.
I think that would be a big change from MO and probably whats going on.

Have your water tested or see if you can get a report from the water company and ask why you have such a smell.
