About how many fruit flies, on average, should my 2 week old gray tree frogs be eating? I watched one the other night catch 10 in one sitting, before he disappeared from view. I'd just been shaking the flies from the culture cup into the vivarium, and all seem to eating well and happy. However, by morning I'll find about 30 of them (the flies, not frogs) drowned in the water dish ("stupid fruit flies," my 3 year old says). It's wasteful for one thing, and for another, I'll be out of town for a couple nights and want to make sure my frogs' caretaker has a good idea of what might not be enough.
I'm currently culturing and feeding melanogaster because they seemed easier to culture. I hadn't played with fruit flies since high school . I do have a few hydei left from the "pet store." Those seem better equipped to rescue themselves because of their larger size.
Also, about when should I consider feeding them larger fare?
Bueller, Bueller...
I make sure my toadlets get at least 4 daily. You need to be dusting with vitamins and calcium though, they need those even more right now since they are growing!

I usually over do it and see how many they eat, then adjust the number I add the next time. I like to have a few wandering around after the initial feeding frenzy so that the youngsters always have a ready meal available to maximize growth.

I leave an orange slice in there for the wanderers, they usually go sit on it and it makes them easy prey for the toadlets!

These guys are ridiculous gluttons! Perhaps I should consider something slightly larger than a hydei FF? I've noticed they definitely seem to prefer them over the melanogaster at this point. John, I tend to overdo it as well . I do dust them, but about every other feeding. Should I increase that?
You should dust them every feeding while they're still young. My toads are eating about 20 each now! I usually put 60-80 in with them and they are all gone.
