As I look at his body and size I also think its closer to P. Adspersus than P. Edulis. But the confusing thing about it is that he croaked like an edulis. But as you said the problem is that they mabey crossed and are not indentifiable. His female looks more like edulis and is same size as a female adspersus.
You have still that frog which looks like this frog. Do you have recent pics of it?
