Hi, I use a layer of small rocks, leaving a pond area, then Sphagnam Moss on the top. That way the water level is just in the rocks and the plants and moss stay nice and healthy. It grows really well in that situation as well.
None, substrates are too much of a pain to keep clean.
Coir (coconut fiber products)
Fir Bark
Cypress Bark
Soil: Potting soil, self-collected, etc. (Please comment in thread!)
Sand
Gravel
Moss: temperate, tropical, sphagnum, peat (Please comment in thread!)
ABG Mix (Ron Gagliardo's mix that he developed at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens)
I use my own homemade mix (Please comment in thread)
