actually this isn't the first time I've heard sounds from Jade. Last week I heard what sounded like a slight purr sound and tonight we were startled by a loud quack type sound. I checked her/him/it and was on the glass... looked fine, not excited or anything.

Is there a way to check for a release call like you can with toads by touching certain areas of their backs? Would only males make a release call?

edit: I'm adding another call to the list... It's a one off call kind of like a bullfrog call but flatter with less harmonics. I'd have to say with the variety of calls, it's safe to assume Jade is a male. Maybe I have to call him Jake.

It rained today and now it's very humid out.

    Hi Chris.
I can tell you for sure that my Female frogs (Bell Frogs) do purr like you say. Its usually when another frog is climbing over them. Its a little bit like a croak but more soft and quiet. They don't do it allot but ive seen and heard it a few times. I thought that she was telling her male partner "not tonight dear"

Jade looks great by the way, she's filled out beautifully. How are they both reacting to each other?

If it's a quack call, like Dumper, it's definitely a male.

edit: shame on me, seems i didn't read your first post thoroughly so lots of rubbish-info coming up >.< sooorry!

i'm not an expert at all but actually i've read (and heard ^^) that females might call too. mine are just doing it when the others climb on them as well, but seems there are females who call "just for fun"... (in german forums/pages they say EVERYWHERE they are very hard to distinguish, since white's' croaking is not a reliable "source" AT ALL to tell what sex they have.. (?))

you can (try to) distinguish them by those brown nuptial pads on their thumbs/arms, if they have them, and the males have a more flabby (especially after calling) and darker/more yellowish throat than the girls, who's is really white and looks somewhat compact or boney(?). dunno how to explain that properly, but i think you'll see what i mean if you compare a few boys' and girls' throats. (edit: looking at your's throat i'd dare to guess it might be a boy..? and "it" looks more boyish to me in general. but just gut feeling. if at all...) in my opinion that's the best way to find out.

and seems that the guys tend to have larger feet to climb on the girls... (never heard of that before or after but the woman at the pet store chose our second girl like that and it seems to really be a girl. but don't ask me how large an average frog's foot is.)

here's a couple pictures of my juvenile male (Dumper), he has the stereotypical saggy dark throat and visible nuptial pads. Jade has no physical male traits and a very white throat. He/she only called that one night.... silent since while Dumper calls daily.

Maybe I'll never know, butit doesn't really matter to me as I don't know of any behavioural differences between the sexes (are there any?)
