    Default Another mixed frog/toad question...

I just met a girl that has a Cane toad in with 2 female Pacman frogs, both Pacman frogs are large females. The Cane is alittle bigger. Now she has had this setup for almost three years. How did she pull this off? I know that mixing species is bad for spreading diseases etc. I would even dream of mixing two species together nevermind those two.

I think she has got lucky so far, she begs to differ. She feeds the frogs with tongs and the toad just eats what the frogs dont eat. There has to be some kind of stress for the frogs/toad. It is not like one knows the other ones threats ie the toads poison. I am trying to convince her that she should separate them, do you guys have any other reasons why she should separate them?

Pac-mans will eat anything they can get in their mouths including each other and we all know marine/cane toads are seriously toxic. Also marines are usually wild caught and carry parasites, but by now those captive bred pac-man will have whatever the toad has been carrying.

There is also the chance she is BS-ing you.

Don't frogs/toads live together in the wild?

This is like running back and forth across a country highway with your eyes closed - you'll probably be fine but eventually something will come along and hit you. My main misgivings would be parasites of different geographical origin (mainly form the Cane Toad to the frogs since he is likely wild caught), possible disease issues (though at this point that is less of a risk) and definitely toxins from the Cane Toad should one of the Pacman frogs try to bite it.

They don't live in a small tank together in the wild, they rarely come into contact, and these two species definitely don't share habitat in the wild naturally.

I have heard of people keeping fire bellied toads and green tree frogs together.

Not a good idea! Fire-bellies are quite toxic.

They are wrong. This is not the case in fire bellied toads.

Just a note to everyone... be very careful about taking advice from pet shop employees.

I did see this weird setup yesterday, the cane toad is super friendly compared to mine. The pacman frogs had to be dug up for me too see them. Looked like they were in a cocoon state. Neither looked like they are able to eat each other. However I did convince her to separate them and take them to the vet for parasite checkup.
