    Default Best substrate?

My female, Obi, used to eat in her water dish, minimizing her eating the jungle bark substrate I use. However, lately, she wants to eat in her "hole" and she sucks in a lot of bark. Most of the time she spits it back out, but she has to be ingesting some of it, and I am getting worried about impaction. I would like to know what other owners of ABFs use, and good and bad things about their choice. Thanks everyone!!

I've been using eco-earth for mine. My pyxie still gets some of the dirt, but it digests better than bark.

I also use cocofiber and I have no complaints with it.
My frog ingests it from time to time and it passes problem free.

Thanks guys. Maybe I will give that a try. Would a mix of soil and cocofiber be better, I wonder??

I would say so. especially if you ever want live plants.
Also the beneficial bacteria found in soil can help break down the frogs waste.
Your frogs may also get some nutrients from the soil (minerals/trace elements and etc.). I want to do a 50/50 combo of cocofiber/topsoil for chubbz.

That is an excellent suggestion Kevin. Thank you. I will work on that this next week. The Bullfrogs need a change anyway-does the body good (especially in this case!!).

I like to throw a handful of play sand into the mix also, helps to keep it from "chunking' up over time.
Watching FrogTV because it is better when someone else has to maintain the enclosure!

Play sand? Okay, I'll do that as well. Never hurts to try it. And I promise to post lots of pics!

Bark is a very bad choice...good to hear you're removing it.

I like about 2/3 cocofiber and 1/3 organic topsoil. The soil helps to hold onto some of the moisture better then just just cocofiber. As as kevin alluded to, a mix provides more stability for live plants to become rooted.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It seems that sand, cocofiber and soil are the top choices. I'm not sure I will be putting live plants in with my frogs, but I think they are going to like the texture of the above mixture better as well. Thanks again for everyone's imput!!
