I recently caught some California toad tadpoles. I haven't raised toad tadpoles in a long long time, and they were Bufo americanus. So this is my first experience with this species. The first tadpole morphed, and seemed to take a long time to absorb its tail (about two weeks compared to <1 week of the later toadlets.)
This early toadlet seems to be have been having difficulty eating. Upon closer inspection I see that there is some problems with his mouth (See attached photos). I'm not so familiar with toad metamorphosis and originally thought this might repair itself. However, this hasn't situation changed in the past few days.
Since this is the first toadlet to change. I was just curious if any more experienced person knows if is a normal occurrence or I have a developmentally defective toadlet that should probably be euthanized. Thank you for your suggestions.
It isn't normal, he is malformed. I would cull him.
