Info needed asap
noticed a "blister" on Chocolate this am...she has been totally healthy ( a little chunky) but perfect....broke down the tank and moved everyone to separate isolation tanks...within 5 hours, she was dead...had anyone seen or heard of blisters? afraid it may be contagious to the remaining 3 frogs.
I don't know what it is, but that looks exactly like what killed my green tree frog, but she had it on her foot.
Did your die not really acting sick within hours of seeing this. I had calls into 3 vets & specialist some out of state.. Havent heard anything. I have had the frogs for 7 months without any problems or concerns, so this abrupt and totLly unexpected event has just broken my heart. One of the universities will do necropsy to give me more detail , as I don't want to lose the others. I thought for sure someone hear would have seen this.
Thanks for the reply ... I was starting to wonder if I posted incorrect and this was a private message to myself! ,). Thanks
Sorry for your loss Laura.
I haven't seen this and am not sure what it could be. Hopefully someone here has more info they can provide towards what this may be.

Thanks Don,
A pretty horrifying experience! One of my docs sent me her protocol if anyone else shows signs of blistering. We have discovered a small Pleco missing..wonder if that was a culprit. Either way, too afraid of the old tank and it's contents if it is bacterial or fungal in nature...so 400.00 later...new tank, plants etc. Wish us luck !
I am so very sorry, Laura.
Thanks Eric,
It's been quite devistating.. Chocolate was really unique in personality... I never saw this coming....I spend a great deal of time on here and on the net in general ...looking into best technique, plants, etc...for 7-8 months..all was perfect... I pray this really was a bizarre, or unique situation...either way...EVERYTHING...including the tank, has been replaced..just in case. Love all the info on this site...I love just looking at everyone's wtf pics! Lol. These guys just amaze me
Your WTF tank had a pleco living in it? I would guess that the blister was the result of a bacterial infection, and it is possible that the spines on a pleco could create a wound that later became infected. Without a necropsy being done by a vet it will be impossible to say for sure what happened, but my guess is that the frog was wounded, either by the pleco's spines or something else, and that wound became infected and killed him. There is no need to throw away the tank or any nonporous decor like water dishes, they can be sterilized with 10% bleach solution and reused.
Tony, appreciate the bleach idea.. I do have 1 log style decoration they really liked, after 2 days of scalding hot warter...I will still do that...as for everything else..tank included...I'll tell the hubbie, and will put a red bow on that old tank with contents! ,). I WAS NOT taking a chance. The crew are exploring the new pad now...I think they will be happy...they always liked when I rearranged everything..so they should have fun exploring....
Thanks again for the info...I wish the store told me about potential trouble with Pleco as I read many that did include in their enclosures without trouble...I would not have taken the chance. glad Chocolate ate the Lil nasty fish before she died! (sounds mean..but I'm still upset... ) that was the only thing different in the enclosure!
I would still like a sweet creature in the water portion, so any suggestions on a cleaner...non spine, no teeth, non toxic fish you have would ne great..I like bamboo shrimp for this, I dont have the current in this tank it needs....
I don't think that these blisters are caused by wounds or anything like that. To answer your question about whether or not my frog died and acted like nothing was wrong, in short, sort of. Here is the thread I started on here when it happened, and as you will see, nobody really knew what it was, and I got little help on here.

I isolated her from her roommate, and put polysporin on her like someone suggested, and she was doing great. Her foot started to heal, it stopped spreading like it had started to, and it wasn't bleeding anymore. My friend that's in vet school had to babysit them for me because I had to go away for a week, and she did a great job because when I came back, everything was virtually healed! About a month later, when I was leaving for class one morning, I checked on her, and she was sitting all pretty on the edge of her water bowl, and by the time I got back home at lunch time, she was gone :C She was my first frog, and when I got her I didn't think that I would be able to get that attached to her, but it still makes me cry when I think about her. Its been about 10 months since she died, and I still haven't been able to get another American Green.
After she died, I completely overhauled both of my tanks. I went out and got new soil, moss, and I even threw out all of the decorations I had and got new ones. I wanted to make sure that none of them got what she had. The American Green (her name was Captina) died in October, and in January, the worst thing happened. Upon checking on my bigger frogs, I saw that my Golden Tree Frog, Bulbasaur, started to get the blisters on her back legs. Here is the thread that I started for that, and it got a lot more feed back:

I was really scared for Bulbasaur because she had problems ever since I bought her. She had this head tilt that several vets couldn't explain, since after she was treated for an ear infection it didn't go away. They all said that it was a neurological disorder, which started to make sense after awhile.

A few weeks before she got the blisters, she had started to have seizures, which were, for me, scary as hell. I hate seeing animals in pain, and it hurt to watch her. Anyway, she got the blisters, and I felt prepared, and I bathed her in water and polysporin everyday, and I still do it once a week to her. The thing is, she still has seizures fairly often still, but she is still eating well. I have no idea if those blisters caused the seizures, but I'm guessing not. The good news is that she is very happy
I am sorry I rambled on so much, but when I post something on here, I feel like any information is potentially helpful. From experience, if any of your frogs ever get it again, I would suggest bathing them in lukewarm water and mix a bit of cream polysporin in it, and just let them sit in that for about 5-10 minutes everyday.
