    Default Are they depressed?

I don't know what to do? My RETF is looking a lot better. I have had her on antibiotics for three days now. I don't know for sure if she was really sick, it was more of a precaution. I have a green tree frog that I have placed in a kritter keeper b/c others on here have told me that I should not have mixed the species. My vet said that it was okay, as long they were close in size, which they are...

Ever since, my green tree frog seems depressed. She will still eat but she isn't very active and doesn't have that twinkle in her eye, if that makes sense. My RETF is eating and gets up and everything, but she doesn't stay up as long as she used to. She will basically get up, eat, roam a bit and then go back to sleep. I think they miss eachother. They are alone and I do NOT want to get more for fear of sickness to my healthy frogs.

When I had them together and it was just the two of them, Sammy, my other RETF was in quarantine or had already passed....I would catch them cuddled on a leaf together. I would also notice Charlotte (green) would be nose and nose with Isabel and would occasionally "poke" her nose with her hand. Then, they would get up and roam around together. I never saw any bullying or fighting over food, etc.

I don't want them to be lonely or depressed and I'm afraid that's what they are. They looked for Sammy for a few days after he was gone. Should I put them back together or leave them by themselves. I don't want to get anymore of the same species due to sickness.

    Thanks for any help.

If they were living together happily, I don't see why you can't mix them. My WTF actually got really depressed when she was living by herself, so I think some frogs need companionship. If they were happy, put them back together - just supervise for the first couple of hours to make sure they are getting along again.

Artes, I'm usually in agreement with you. In this one, less. I wouldn't mix the RETF with the American Tree frog for this simple reason: they do not have the same requirements in their environment. The Red-Eyed will need a much higher humid environment than the green tree frog. If it<s too humid, the AGTF will become brown and will stop being active. Ultimately, it might get sick.

Same goes for the lack of humidity. In this case, the RETF will not have enough moisture to maintain a good health.

At this point, I would suggest that you read Cheri's reply to your other thread: http://www.frogforum.net/tree-frogs/...-new-post.html

You can apply almost all of this to the American Green tree frog. The only difference is that you will need to keep it more dry, around 70% humidity. So this would mean less misting. Once each two days could be plenty, as long as there is a bowl of water to soak in. Everything else applies: branches, lots and lots of plants, and tall vertical space.

Once you have succeeded improving the life of both frogs, which I am sure you will if you make all the necessary changes, you MAY think about getting another RETF to live in the same enclosure as your RETF, and another AGTF to live with your AGTF. But wait, wait till you have everything back under control.

I actually didn't realize they had different humidity requirements - so, in that case, ignore my post, and get them friends of their own species.

Even if they had the same requirements, it's not advised to mix at all unless you have a PHD in zoology. Each frog has specific skin secreations that will make the others sick. Even mixing red eyes with yellow eyes is a no no. Even though they are both agalychnis

Their humidity requirements do cross over enough to house them together. I have kept my red eyes around 70 percent for years. Now I do give them seasons of dryer times and wetter times depending on the weather in my local area. If it's raining outside I mist them more. If it's a summer and not raining I don't mist as often. Eric...if your Americans are doing fine at 70% then they'll be fine together until Lizzie can get a permanent home for the AGTF. Im just trying to address the immediate life or death issues that we have going on here. I suspect the tank they are in right now as it is set up is on the dry side. Then the fact that they are exposed and possibly having too much light coming in at night could be stressing to the point where they are having health issues. Keeping a AGTF in a small critter keeper is more harmful to him than being in with the Red Eye. The fact that they have come from Petco is a concern because they may have been exposed to different diseases and that's why they should be separated instead of putting them together. But at this point my primary concern is they tank as it is setup right now is not meeting the needs of either frog. That needs to be addressed immediately or Lizzie will continue to lose frogs.

Ginger is absolutely right and that is an excellent reason they should be housed separately .....as soon as you can financially afford to setup two equally appropriate enclosures. Until then keep them together.
