Hi guys,
So it was a long trip. A 3-hour trip to Quebec City (6 hours if you count the going and coming back). Luckily, work paid the hotel last night as I was giving a conference over there.
The first 3 pictures is what we think might be a female. It has speckles on the belly, and is wider and bigger from the waist, as if she was gravid. It's to be confirmed.
On the two following ones, a male. And so are the two last ones. Interestingly enough, when I handled the last one (we took the pictures while we transferred the toads from the carrying case to the tank), the belly started having pink/purple pigmentation.
And there you go!
Eric
Oh Wow! Eric they are gorgeous. I wouldn't have a clue about sexing these frogs but gee whiz, congratulations my friend![]()
Wow Eric these frogs are stunning! Congratulations!
We all know they're in excellent hands. ^ ^

I may or may not know what I'm talking about!
Thank you, Ebony. You do know from my Facebook page how excited I am.
Kisa: Thanks for the vote of confidence. These frogs are hardy once the settle in , but it's the settling part that will be a challenge.
Mike: You are right... I never thought about it... They are pretty black...
Oh wow, they are gorgeous!!
Congratulations! Atelopus spumarius barbatoni have purple/pink bellies. Also, I thought A. s. hoogmoedi had yellow markings. Of course their markings might appear to be white due to stress.
Shawn Harrington (one of DB's moderator) is pretty certain that my potential female is indeed a female. So on to building a breeding tank. Here are two shots of mine, and two shots of my friend Alex's yellow color morph.

I'm jealous my friend very nice.
they look to be in great shape as well. I am pretty sure that femals will get noticeably bigger.
These are good signs of great things to come with atelopusBest of luck.
Hi Eric. They are indeed in great shape. They have been in quarantine since May 2, being treated as a prevention for Chytrid and parasites. But there was no nose rub or anything of that sort from the get go. A very nice batch indeed.
Congrats Eric....they are really cool. I have found that if you give it a boy name...it will most certainly be a girl. Works for me every time.![]()
I can't forget my son Theo who held the Atelopus hoogmoedi from their first location to our home. He's a trooper.
Dude, I'm stoked for you. In the short time I had mine, (I lost my other one as well) they grew on me super fast. Really cool frogs, I wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted on their progress, I truly hope you get em fully established.![]()
I will. Again, I'm really sorry about your loss. If you want to PM me, I'll invite you to a Facebook group on the Atelopus. You will be able to chat with other hobbyist, and mainly, Corey W, who's the go to person. They can help you figure out what happened.
Eric
Update:
So far, so good. The two male frogs are quite bold, and will explore the tank out of stress these days. They sleep on the tallest leaves.
The third one has been confirmed to be a female by Raymond Coderre (stemcellular). Therefore, I'll build a new breeding tank...
Eric
