I have been working towards breeding my retfs for some time now. I have three adults, two females and one male. (I know I need 2-3 males for every female, but the ones I order through the mail always arrive dead, or my other ones are too young still...)
Anyways, I had one male and female in there dry season cage and they engaged in amplexus unexpectedly before she was even bigger than the male was, so of course no eggs were ever laid although it sure was exciting to witness.
A few months passed and now I have finally completed their rainchamber... 20 gallon high turned vertically with a front opening door which utilizes a false bottom, all live plants, bromeliad, bamboo, and pothos ivy overhanging the water. The rain system comes on 4 times a night for about 45 minutes each time.
I've had one pair of frogs in there for almost a week now.
The male has been calling like crazy and the pair has engaged in amplexus at least two nights so far that I know of. The longest stint he stayed on her back was for about 14 hours or so... However, they have never laid any eggs yet whether fertilized or not. None.
So I have two questions...
1). Is it absolutely necassary to have more males to invoke the female to produce eggs?
2.) How long does it take for a female to produce eggs? Does she start when the male is on her back, or does she start producing eggs inside of her as the season changes without the males help?
I have been wondering this question for months now and I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Any help would benefit me tremendously.
Thanks!
