I've seen quite a few builds using mortar. I wanted some specifics on any problems with it. My concern is the Lyme used for all concrete products. Lyme is an acid I think would burn the frogs. So main question is, what mix are you all using? And what effects does it have on the frogs? And do you seal it?
I've been using quikrete cement mixed with acrylic fortifier. Using fortifier instead of water is supposed to make it more water resistant and form a stronger bond. Cement (and mortar) will act as a buffer and raise the pH of your water. Just give it time to cure, a month or two, and keep it damp or submerged in water and test the pH regularly until it's no longer raising it, then it's safe to populate. No sealing for me. I've also tinted the cement with your basic craft store acrylic paint for a more realistic look.
I am however new to this. I've got one Hyla cinerea with a cement background that I've had for 4 months and another cement build for firebellied toads that's not yet populated (I have pics in my "vivarium" album). Here's a link to a thread on dendroboard (that someone else pointed out to me) by a guy who made cement rocks for aquariums as a business for a more experienced view http://www.dendroboard.com/forum/par...tml#post431837
There's tons of other info out there to search for, here's one using grout that mentions sealing with epoxy if you like, but they say it's not necessary ,Making Artificial Rocks | GlassTropics
Thanks uncle!! I love concrete, I have polished concrete floors, countertops, bar, and tub surround. So I want this build to match the house. I will start studyin those links, you've made it easier for me.
I didn't want to seal it as this darkens the Crete.
Thank you much!!
