I bought a plant late yesterday afternoon and on the way home I got hopping bonous!I'm thinking its some kind of tree frog? Can someone tell me the type of frog he/she is. Its super jumpy (whish I'm asumming has to do with being wild, but aren't from here so can't just release it) so was hard to catch in the car and get into a temp habitat, so these were the best pics I could get. He/she was super hungry and ate 3 tiny crickets in seconds, poor guy. Also what exactly do I need for his/her habitat? Size of habitat needed? What kind of substrate? What's a good temp? How big will it get when full grown? Right now its pretty tiny.
Thanks

I am no good with the id. My concern is exposure to the plants fertilizer. Give him spring water in his bowl for a week. He's a tree frog and needs lots if branches.
Maybe if you got a face shot it would be easier to id
Hi again! I'm pretty certain this is a Hyla cinerea (American Green tree frog). They are rather easy to take care of. Again, tree frog.... Think tree... Therefore a vertical tank... With lots of branches, leafage, plants anything where that beautiful little creature can hide behind. Humidity around 75%. Room temperature. A bowl of water in which it can soak at night!
Eric
I don't think it's an American species. There are a few signs that it could be a White's tree frog, albeit a very underweight one. Only a guess. Do you have a size measurement? A view of the frog's face and eyes would help immensely.
And why don't I ever get free frogs with my plants?![]()
Thanks everyone. After a lot of research and what you guys said he does look like an American Green tree frog, I tried to get a pic of his face but he's pretty wild and not having that. He started calling yesterday afternoon though LOL. I don't think its a White's tree frog it looks nothing like my White's non of the same markings or anything, and completely different call sound.
Someone asked about size, he's just under an inch long.
A couple of more questions:
Clownonfire said room temp is fine, so 70'sF during the day is fine? What about at night?
Also he seems to be burrowing under his soil a lot, is that normal/ok?
The size would indicate even more that it is an American Green Tree Frog.
If he is burrowing, it could be because it is looking for humidity. Do you also have a bowl of water so it can hydrate?
As for the humidity, keep it constant around 75%. A bit above and below will not hurt at all. Temperature: Between 68 and 77. They are really easy toc are for. But make sure it has lots of room to climb up!!!
Eric
Thanks Eric!
He's good on humidity and does have a bowl of water, lots of places to climb and such. Just had him in a temp place at the time I took the pics.
Ok here is another question since you mentioned humidity cause now I'm second guessing what the hygrometer says. Is is better to place the thermometer/hygrometer at the top, middle, or bottom of the tank?
I have the exact same frog if you look in my album you will see him. =) He is most defanatily an American Green Tree Frog =). They are awsome to look at and play with.much luck with your little guy
Hyla cinerea is my vote too (I have an album for mine if you wan more comparison).
The burrowing could be humidity as mentioned, could also be fear of his new surroundings so time will be needed to settle in. Check out the care article http://www.frogforum.net/tree-frog-c...ysoscelis.html different frog but similar requirements (your frog isn't freeze tolerant). A home for him is 10 gallons minimum, more is always appreciated (mine lives in this for now, but will get a larger tank as he grows). Height is more important than width as they enjoy climbing. Lots of climbing and hiding spots. Avoid handling him if possible, they are look but don't touch pets.
Are you planning to keep him long term?
Hey Brian, thanks for the info. Yes I'm planning to keep him, I realize he's wild but since he's not native to my state releasing is NOT an option. I have him in a 10 gal vertical right now. Planning to go bigger and he gets bigger. I think you are completely right about the burrowing due to fear of his new surroundings because he's no longer burrowing. He sleep where I can see him during the day (although he has tons of places to hide and sleep) at night he's completely out and about exploring his new home.
I have three in a 12 x 12 x 16 tank, with a ponytail palm planted in it. I also suctioned a fake vine to the side of the tank, and I have a cork bark background, and a small water bowl. They seem to be very happy in their tank, and they love the palm. They occasionally swing from the leaves like Tarzan, and they enjoy sitting on the trunk. I spray the tank about once or twice a day, and keep it at room temperature. I use a lamp on top, but its just a regular light bulb to make sure the palm is getting enough light.
