    Default Welcoming Atelopus spumarius

    Hi all,

I had made up my mind that my focus would now be solely on P. terribilis. Well, that is still true... But. I couldn’t pass up the offer of owning 2 male Atelopus spumaria (yes Seth, your post had something to do with it). A hobbyist friend of mine from Quebec City will be receiving 6 WC Atelopus spumarius. They were part of a rescue. There is no guaranty on their health, and they will have to be quarantined and the whole gamut before anything. But they are free, and they will be rescued. Furthermore, I will be able to pick them up myself in May (or mid-June) as I am giving a conference there during those two months.

I have a 29 gallon just laying around which i will need to work on pronto during the next few weeks, with a flowing water pond – which in itself is a nice challenge for me. Don’t ask me if I will breed... No for a few obvious reasons: 1 – I’m all about the terribs. 2 – I’ll never get a female... Unless Taron and Ray look the other way on the perfect day...

Actually, let me rephrase that. I am not making myself any illusions. I know females are almost impossible to get. But it could happen. And if it happens, and then perhaps I will explore that avenue once I master the terribs. I would like that.

For the time being, these will be just for me. For my collection. What are my chances of ever owning such a frog... Especially here in Canada...

Congrats on your decision Eric! I hope it all works out well for you!

You're signature is going to get quite long if you keep adding frogs...>>

So I have a question for you all. It's been suggested that the Atelopus spumarius need a pond with fresh water running. My idea was to build one by siliconing glass walls at the bottom and back glass of the vivarium. In it, I would use a water filter (clean water is apparently a must) protected by eggcrates to change the sponge easily. I want to add some hydro balls at the bottom for even more filtering, and add natural rocks that we have and pieces of wood. The filter would be used of course to stream the water from the bottom, and push it out from the top, creating a soft stream.

What do you think? Any other ideas?

Hey Eric, I have two of these and I keep going back and forth on whether or not to create a running water feature in their viv. Their final home is going to be a 20L with lots of live plants and hiding spots, but I'm hesitant to do a running water feature as I'm not really good at successfully creating them. My two are doing fine at the moment, I've seen them eat and they seem really healthy. Good luck

Of course you can go all elaborate but you you also could do it rather simple. They make turtle filters/ pumps that you put in a corner and hide it behind some rocks. The water only needs to be two inches deep. How deep are you looking to make the pond? Congrats on the new frogs by the way...slow down Im trying to keep up. .
