I have a questions about Hydroton (leca), the clay ball substrate.
1.) How heavy are they? Example: covering an average 10 gallon tank w/ an inch of the clay balls. 10 oz? 10 pounds?
2.) Over time, will they eventually form into a solid brick later on down the road?
3.) Over time, will they become brittle and break-off into little pieces?
Just curious. I'm looking at alternatives. I may have found one.
Thank you for your attention.
Brian
1. LECA is very light, about half of the weight of gravel.
2. No. They have already been fired in kiln like pottery, so unless you glue them together, they will not stick and become one large mass.
3. That I can not answer for sure. My best guess is no.
to continue with what Kurt stated-
This product does not clump or break down over time. Think of it as ceramic foam. Breakage due to age is very uncommon, and most reports of it are due to misuse by the consumer. A one inch depth in a standard US gallon tank would have (roughly) an average weight of around 2-3 pounds.
Watching FrogTV because it is better when someone else has to maintain the enclosure!
Thanks! You guys helped with my decision!
You're welcome.
