    Cool Hello toaders

    Hello,

I'm starting to like toads (maybe more than newts) I have 2 juvenile Bufo bufo and recently acquired 3 currently unidentified south american toads that were used as props in a film. I read that I'm not supposed to, but I really enjoy hand feeding them. The little bufo bufo sit on the palm of my hand and eat mosquito larvae, very cute. I'm interested in getting Bufo melanostictus or Bufo alvarius.

I'm a big advocate for hand feeding or feeding outside the home for several reasons...

With this interaction you start to understand their behavior and can tell when something may be wrong. You are more in tune with their appearance and can better detect changes or signs of disease/injuries. You are more aware of their environment since you are regularly opening their lid/door and sticking your hand in. You don't get bored with them and forget about them (like I used to do with fish). Frogs aren't considered companion animals, but I have developed emotional ties with them and I get excited when it's feeding time and they do too. It may be my imagination but I have interpreted 4 or 5 different emotions/moods from my male White's tree frog that I may have not noticed if I was just dumping crickets into his tank.

I would continue hand feeding them, just make sure you wash good before and after handling if you weren't doint this already.

    Cool Re: Hello toaders

i say "starting" to like, but i have always loved toads really, just only started hand feeding them recently, which as chris says, creates emotional ties. One of the south american toads tried amplexus with my hand when i picked it up, very strong! They are much more relaxed with me than at first.

Hello john, I still love my caudates though!

I hand or tong feed mine in a Sterilite box, strictly to avoid any risk of impaction issues.

Welcome aboard! There are quite a few "Toad freaks" around here.
Watching FrogTV because it is better when someone else has to maintain the enclosure!
