    Default Gherkin looking thin...?

Just pulled Gherkin from a semi-hibernation (along with my other two African Bullfrog) and he looks a lot thinner than I was expecting him too. Especially compared to Obi and Kadesh. Just wondering what others thought. He just ate 12 earthworms and I have an adult mouse thawing in a bowl, but I very rarely feed mice to any of my bullfrogs so I am hesitating giving him one. But I really think he needs that extra bit of fat. Including some pics so any thoughts would be great appreciated! Thanks...

    Jo-Anna,

Awww....Little Gherkin. I do not own any African Bullfrogs but I would assume that after a state of hibernation they would be thinner because they have been feeding off of their body's fat stores.

I would offer him whatever he wishes to eat to beef him up again. Other members that own bullfrogs I'm sure can offer alot of advice.

Keep us up to date on how he is doing, and I'll follow on FB as well.

Take care, and I hope you get to feeling better from your cold.

if you dont feed him mice one is not going to hurt him he looks like he could do with bulking up or give him a cockrel chick but i would defo let him have something substantial get his body back in tune with that huge head lol.

    cheers spencer..........

Thanks guys, that's what I thought! Okay, time to go into beef up mode. He ate a whole package of earthworms last night, and I am picking up more today and I will give him the adult mouse I thawed for him last night. I might pick up some crickets, gutload them, and feed him 50 or so of those as well. He is active and alert-pooping in his water bowl as I type...sigh-but definitely not his chunky self.

Thanks Lesley-you will be seeing updates on FB for sure!! As for the cold, if I could just get rid of the cough I would be doing much better. A week later, and it's still going strong. Thanks for the well wishes!!

Since mid-November. The place I usually get earthworms from (the main staple of their diet) could not get any in the last few months, and crickets were just not cutting it. So I gave them extra dirt and placed them in a cooler part of the house. Now the worms are back, so I brought them into a warm part and Gherkin was the first to start moving around and sit in his water dish. But when I saw how thin he was, I dug up Obi and Kadesh (they are still quite chubby). Gherkin is quite a bit older than my other two and this is the first time in the three years I have had all of them that I tried any sort of hibernation. Not sure if I will be doing it again... But his appetite is very good-he was just gobbling up those worms!
