Default Red Eye Leaf Frog died

on Wednesday night I found my youngest red eye dead sitting in the waterfall. This is the first frog I've ever lost and I am quite puzzled. He looked perfectly fine. He was always chubby and very active for a red eye. I just saw him eat the night before. He had no abrasions or any sores on him. He looked perfectly healthy. I got him about six months ago at the same time as another red eye. The only difference I have seen is he didn't grow very fast. The other frog is now double his size I just figured him to be a boy and the larger frog a girl. But maybe he was a runt or something. All the other frogs look and act perfectly fine. Has anyone ever lost what looked like a perfectly healthy frog? I just don't get it.

Cheri, so sorry to hear. Sometimes they just pass on and we don't know why, but he had a safe and comfortable home while he was with you.

I am so sorry to hear about your little frog! I have lost a couple of toads that by all outward appearances looked normal and healthy. It can be frustrating when you don't know the cause or how to prevent it in the future. Best of luck with you other little ones. Hugs.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I'm afraid unless you were to have an examination done it will remain a mystery. There are many causes for sudden death in all creatures. Just to name a few that we encounter are heart attack, strokes, respiratory failure. For a single frog to suddenly die is sad and can cause you to worry about what the cause was. I would not really be (for lack of a better word), concerned about it in the long run. If you suddenly have multiple deaths then I would think disease or a environmental factor.

One other thing I noticed in your post. This was your youngest and I assume newest frog. That leads me to think it might not have been as healthy as he outwardly appeared. Does that make sense to you?

Cheri I'm so sorry to hear about your Red Eye, I know how much pride you had in that collection. Poor little guy...and Don's right, at least he was happy when he was with you.

I hope I don;t ever have to encounter this situation, I would not be as mature as you if one of my froggies suddenly dropped. D: Sorry for your loss...<3

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. This is the first frog that I've ever lost and its just such a shock. Im so diligent on making sure each frog is eating and acting normal. I account for each frog everynight at feeding time just to make sure everyone is getting their fair share. They have fresh water everyday to soak in. He was always the first frog to wake up at night and the last to go to bed in the morning. One thing that did seem strange was that he would still be up when the lights came on in the morning and all the other frogs would be back at their leaf. Also all the others sleep on a favorite leaf and he would sleep in random spots. He was small...not scary small...but definately smaller than the other frog that I got at the same time. He doesn't appear to have gotten any larger in the last couple of months as the other continued to grow. Although he ate fine and seemed just as plump as the rest of them.

I'm sorry to hear about your frog. I know how you feel as far as having one die unexpectedly. When mine died, I instantly thought it was something that I may have done or something. But I also have to keep in mind that some things are or were meant to be, however I still wrack my brain as to what happened.

Don't beat yourself up about it, just try to keep all your other frogs as happy as you can. That's all you really can do.

    Again, sorry for your loss.

Do you think it could have been something genetically wrong with the frog? I know that sounds strange, and I don't even know the possibility of genetic defects in frogs, but could it have been that he had some sort of DNA illness that caused him to die early? We see it in other animals all the time, and in humans. Maybe there was just something off genetically about him and it caused him to pass?
