I have heard these little guys are great tank cleaners and also a good snack for frogs toads etc. Has anyone ever used these guys in there tanks?? I have three California toads in a 40 breeder tank that's half water half land. Any info or opinons on the isopods greatly appreciated.
I've kept them before but never with frogs. They need moist hiding places to survive. They breathe through gills.
Ive used them in tanks both as custodian and as feeders. They do really well and will clear up mould, dead feeder insects. They are quite slow to reproduce at first so if they are picked off by the frogs they can take a time to restablish. Springtails boom much quicker and so I find a mixture of springs and isopods works best.

I culture a few types and they are a must have imo.
they are a great calcium source And very easy to culture. They help keep a viv cleaner and much more natural. Plus they are just plain cool.
the dwarf white tropical woodlice are one of the most popular and useful imo and a must have for any serious dartfrog or small frog keeper
I also forgot to mention that i have read that woodlice Will eat mites
They do drown very easily though so I'd suggest instead of splitting the tank half land-half water get a tall dish or tub with a lip that they can't access or get over. They do great under leaf cover or moss and other moist areas, like if you raised your water dish over some thin pieces of slate and kept it wet in that side of the tank.
A little wet fish food sprinkled here and there near their haunts will keep them fed. I'm with berksmike though, if you want to raise them start another tank.
You don't really need half water/half land for toads anyway!![]()
Necro bump! I just put about 30 in, of mixed sizes for my chorus and cricket frogs. They're already chowing down. I going to catch more and put some in with my tiger salamander.
