Hi, I decided to remove the last of my goldfish in the spring out of my pond and go to a spot i know of in a rural area and get some tadpoles. I ended up releasing several hundred over a couple of months into the pond which holds about 1500litres of water and is full of lilies and pond plants. The garden around it and down one side of the house is well planted with plenty of ground cover,taller plants and has an irrigation system.
The tadpoles soon turned into frogs and the tiny southern brown tree frogs {litoria ewingii] hopped away into the garden. I soon discovered there were about 30-40 tadpoles that were growing much larger which have now all turned into frogs. They are staying in and around the pond and are growling grass frogs [litoria raniformis}
It is now nearly three months since i released the first batch of tadpoles. The other day after some light rain and some very hot days i had a careful look around the garden to discover approx twenty tree frogs sleeping on various plants, some 6ft off the ground and looking rather fat. Ive also noted that the other frogs are growing fast and eating anything that moves thats near them.
I have two half wine barrels with pond plants in another area and plan to build another pond closer to the back of the house.
What i really want to know is do the tree frogs have any chance of growing to mature frogs and breeding in the garden with 20-30 larger growing litoria raniformis roaming the garden??
