Most people use Great Stuff expanding foam. As far as the silicone I use GE 1 for windows and doors. Other people use the GE 2 for windows and doors. Just make sure it doest have any anti mildew inhibitors in it. Stay away from stuff that says kitchen and bath.

like cheri mention, gaps and cracks or the pond greatstuff works good. You can also use floral foam or packing foam for cheaper. I prefer using packing foam as it's a bit easier to work with and depending on what you plan to create with it you can do it outside of the habitat, instead of trying to carve it within the tank. When it comes to silicon the one thing I noticed is the GE2 has a lingering smell unlike the clear aquarium silicon.
